Has anyone put a ZF6 behind a 460?

How did you do it?

I'm sure you already know, hence the question. I'm unaware of any 385 to diesel/modular adapter.

I have heard of a BBF to 5600 but can’t find it. But the ZF6 is 1st choice.

I don't have the answer you are looking for, but supposedly you can mod a 460 ZF S5-42/47 to work behind an IDI, and a ZF S6-650 will bolt up to an IDI, so it seems that you should be able to make it work somehow

Only works to put a gasser trans on a diesel, doesn't work to put the diesel trans on a gasser.

Zf-6 came behind, 5.4-6.4 gas, and 7.3-6.0-6.4 diesel. Do they all share the same bell housing?

The 4.6/5.4/6.8/6.0/6.4 are the same bellhousing pattern, the 7.3 has its own (shared with the other earlier IH diesels). The 460 uses the "big block" bellhousing that is different from anything a zf-6 came in.

Mod is same as SBF but two dowels are bolts and two bolts are dowels. Find someone who stuck a BBF in front of an SBF trans and copy that.

We haven’t found that yet either.

BBF is the same as SBF but the top two bolts are further up and further apart. Dowels are in the same place relative to crank. It's pretty easy to add an aluminum plate with the extra holes since presumably you have an engine around that you can use as a jig to bolt everything to.

I've seen adapters for automatics. The 429/460 to SBF 4R70w for a smaller transmission case with overdrive and 429/460 to LS pattern to run the 4L80E behind a 460. Could you use a GM pattern ZF6 and an adapter plate to get a larger clutch?

Why?

ZF6 is a fine trans, just not seeing the payoff over a ZF5 in a 460 truck

unless it's something awesome :smokin:

It is a friends truck with a stroked 460 on 37s. He drives it a lot and with 4.10s it could use another gear or 2. I remember my ZF5 truck had a bad split between 2 and 3, iirc.

The ZF6 2-3 split isn't much better, the 1-2 isn't as severe on a 6 speed but after that they're not a ton different. He might as well go with the bolt on ZF-5 option. What's in it now? AA makes an overdrive box for the 4 speeds that might be an option. That's what I'm going with when I can swing it for my old 460/NP435 truck.

It has a ZF5 now. I have been trying to talk him into putting a Holley Sniper or similar on the motor to improve overall driveability but he likes making stuff and has all the machines to do it so he wants the 6 speed

Cut the front of the bell housings off both and weld the 5 on the 6.
