What's new

Harbor Freight/Badlands Apex 12000

My 7 owner YJ that I am refurbishing and building a mild wheeling rig out of has a 9000 lb badlands that looks to be 100 years old. Still works. I want to replace it because it's so ugly not because it doesn't work.

The Irate Parts Counter will be online by the end of Oct, 250+ vendors and 300k+ parts avail.

Warn, Smittybilt, Rugged Ridge, DV8, Westin are a few of the brands off the top of my head

If you have a winch you're looking at, aside from HF brand, PM me a part number and I'll get back to you with a price.

Edit: I've been wanting to try one of the Smittybilt Gen3 winches.

Hf sells on Amazon, is there a chance they could route it through your store?

I almost bought one when they came out, but Amazon had the Smitty X20 10k for $430 so I went with that. The HF only comes with a 3 month warranty and it was like and $100+ to add the two year. Might still be worth it, but the Smitty does what I need.

I know it's not the winch you're talking about but I've got 2 of the 12k HF wire rope winches on trailers, one of them going on 8+ years. It's dragged anything I've needed up on the deck without issue. Would buy again.

i just bought one for my jeep...but im at the point jn my life that i do not plan on using it :lmao:

with 20 percent off and rope im happy with it.....

couple of guys in my club had the old hf winchs....and they held up fine with multiple uses ...but yes..they were unbelievable slooooow:laughing:

Thanks for the input.
Well. I got the wire cable. It was a long day getting the new trailer. 850 miles round tri . Hopefully have the winch mounted next week. I gotta go back to work tomorrow.

Sooo bumping this up. Looking to get a winch for the new hulse buggy. This uses a short drum winch...which means buying a rugcel, or warn comp. Or cutting down a winch.

I have a smittybuilt 12k on my truggy that i can cut down if needed. Then add a NEWER winch to the truggy.

it has worked fine over the 15+ years i've had it.. I have looked at the FBMP for winches. Best deal so far has been a power wagon 12k(really w 15k, motor opposite side and pulls reverse.) for $250, but needs a remote and line. Add this to the truggy which is a big girl, and move the small 12k over to little buggy.

Thoughts on the budget brands? rough country, rugcel, warrior, badlands, etc?

I've got a smittybilt on my car hauler and it's been abused for years and keeps on pulling. It's in a toolbox out of the elements though. The champion winch I had on my jeep turned into a huge chunk of rust due to being outside for years.

I put the bulldog comp on my hulse. Way way overkill. its heavy and bulky for a small light buggy.
id probably go rough country 6500 if i had to do over.
Dont forget about Runva.

What’s the speed like on the el cheapo winches nowadays?
Only reason I splurged on a Warn was speed and a good deal from a local shop. It gets used a lot because it’s faster than all the other winches in my wheeling group. Especially snow wheeling a fast winch can help you get back on top where a slow winch will drag you through.
But I do have an old HF on the trailer that gets stuff done, just slower. Can’t complain about the price/performance of it.

I believe the line speed is the only complaint I have heard regarding HF

I always go overkill on winches so its hard for me to commit to a small one even on the buggy

How often you needed it in the last 15 years?

I use my winches as a tool many times more than I needed it, which was only once when I went wheeling solo and was going downhill on a trail & sank in a natural spring mud hole unexpectedly.

I pulled tree stumps, dead vehicles, logs, chicken coop, etc. at home...

I say get another HF winch if you're not breaking out the winch remote every time you take the buggy out type of wheeler... It worked for you for 15 years.
