What's new

Good old tire thread: Budget-friendly decent MT

I ran Cooper SST and whatever they had before that on several trucks. Bought Dick Cepeks for my wife's 01 Dodge 2500 diesel. Currently running Maxxis as I couldn't get Cooperrs.

They have larger voids on the outer lugs than any other normal Mt (ie: not swampers or pit bull) the center is the opposite, but could be opened up easily.

I'll try to take a Pic of mine with a quarter in the tread or something. I don't know why the pics online make them look closer than they are.

I'm just messing around! I agree seeing pics of these things makes them look an AT and they would clog up in like 2 seconds in actual mud. Who knows they could be the greatest tire ever.....

So far they seem decent. We don't have a ton of mud, but they seemed as good as any Mt the one nasty mud experience I had.

The one nice thing about the Falkens was they were c sidewalls, way lighter and aired down much better in the snow than the e rated pat's. The pats do squat good at 4 lbs, but the Falkens were almost too low at 5 lbs.

the patagonia mt? From the ones I have seen on vehicles and trails they look and seem to work well.

I've got some nankang n889 tires off amazon on my pickup and boxtruck. They are about 100 each. Good aggressive tread, 10 ply load range e, some road noise. Had them on the pickup for about a year and I don't see any wear yet, seems to be a pretty hard compound.

I've also been pleased with my Nankang mudstars on my ZJ. $125 ea with free shipping. Immigrant tire shop dismounted, mounted and balanced them for $30 cash.

Wear is good so far and i was surprised with how little road noise they put out.

YMMV.

Just for reference, I have Cooper ATP on my F250, I believe it's the discount tire house brand. 285/75R16 is $180 each. I miraculously get a nail in the shoulder when they're 5/32 tread around 45k miles. Then the other side is prorated for mileage warranty. Rinse and repeat, on my 3rd set.

My alignment, shocks, bearings, joints, etc is perfect on my front end, if I dont rotate they start to chop out. Then they get real noisey, otherwise all good.

FIL has these on his Tundra. They do well enough in mud here. His alignment isn’t perfect, and the tires seem to hold up.

Ran those on my Samurai for about 6 years in a 32x10.5. I tore one sidewall open, it was my fault. They were awesome considering they were being used 75% off road. They did fine when I put them on the highway also.

I like how op asked about decent mt's for his 4runner and everyone is posting their tow rig at's

It's like any other thread: "Hey experts in ABCXYZ, what is your opinion on widget PRQ?"

"Not an XYZ buuuuut..."
"My brother's neighbor is an ABCXYZ so I think that..."
"I don't know anything about PRQ but here's a LMNO..."

PRQ < LMNO < MIATA

I have the patagoina MT's on my 3500, so far they are holding up pretty well.

I been researching most of the tires mentioned and Patagonias seem to be the best bet.

For whatever it's worth, four years and almost 40k miles on the Authority tires. I don't think that's even half worn yet.

Had these on my f350. They wore like shit and sucked in the rain and snow.

I'm a big fan of the falken AT3W.

In all seriousness look at the patagonias. I have a couple of friends running them and so far they have been pleased. The seem to work well on the trail and aren't too noisy atleast when new. Price seems to be in your budget.

I have been running them for about a year now. They will lose chunks on sharp rocks (volcanic stuff) but grip like a raped ape. (aird-down, sandstone)

BTW: They are fucking cheap! After a few thousand miles; they get loud! :lmao:

Has anyone used Treadwright tires lately? I bought three sets years ago and they were pretty good tires but none within the last 10 years. I get emails from them all the time.

They are made in the :usa:.

I always liked the old BFG MT tread.

I just dropped off my F250 and am putting Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 3 on it. There a back order on the BFG, every decent AT tire around here is $350 per tire. I got these at $300 per. They were $350 a tire and local tire places but was able to do $300 at the local firestone store

Did you not see the ones I linked in your thread for $220 ea?

i have these on the burb 2500 with about 8000 miles on them. agree with everyhting said here, but Discount told me they are discontinuing. maybe that size specifically, but he seemed to think it was the model specifically.

I have milestar Patagoinas on my TJ that is street driver cream puff, they seem to work well, the main reason I bought them was they were the cheapest "Name brand" tire out there.

Not a mud tire, but I'm running the patagonia X/T's on my 2500. Wish I'd went with the M/T. Bought these things without seeing a single review, but being on a rough budget at the time. They are decent on the beach, about comparable to a bfg a/t in mud, but where they suck is on gravel roads. That tread spacing is just perfectly staggered to pick up every single fucking rock and throw them right into the paint. Other than that, seem like they're wearing well, balanced well, and exactly what I need. :lmao:

Really impressed with the Maxxis RAZR MT 35 x 12.50 x 15 on my daily 4Runner. Great road manners and fairly aggressive.

been running Dick Cepek Extreme Country's for a few years and they've been good. In a 35x15, they run about $50-60 less per tire than BFGs (as a point of reference)

Hey, Post #3- the worst MTs I could think of!

I thought they looked pretty interesting for a minute, before I came across a couple of forum posts of failures, and TW telling the customer to get fucked.

Have these on our JKU with over 70K miles and still probably half tread. Load range E, 315/75r17 or something. All road miles
