What's new

Genesis G80?

Hyundai owns Kia as a parent company.

I look at their vehicles as a throw away transportation, sub 100k stuff.

Are you not able to locate a grampa owned Town Car/Crown Vic nearby? If you want a couch ride and space those are it.

2011 Impala that is at my house at the moment (moms car) meets your needs.
Save for the POS 4T65E autotragic it is a nice ride and a comfortable freeway cruiser (3.9 V6/LTZ trim).
My wife owned a Hyundai Santafe about 15 years ago. She drove it to 165k miles without any problems.

The majority of Town Cars I see for sale are 15-20 years old. I don't think they made many the last few years (2011 was the last year). I'm looking to get into something newer.

I bought a used 2015 Genesis 5.0 in 2018. Very happy with it, reliable, very quiet, smooth, big, real leather seats, real exotic wood inlays on the inside and every luxury option you can dream of. Rear wheel drive, 430 horsepower V8, 0-60 in roughly 5.0 seconds gets 30 mpg @ 80 mph on a regular basis. Doesn't require premium fuel unless you want the full 430 HP. Smokes most Mustangs, Chargers, Challengers, Cameros, Raptor trucks, Lexus and most other European cars, and yes I've raced them all. After winning they usually pull up and ask me, what the fuck is it? I tell them you just got beat by a Hyundai. It's an absolute blast to drive, I've had zero issues with it except tires, I'd buy another one.
My daily driver is a 2015 Kia K900 V8, essentially your car’s sister.

I concur everything you said except the 30 mpg at 80mph claim, though.

My best tank was 26 mpg at 70 mph with tailwind. Usually pull approx 23-24 on highway.

Only thing I wish I did was to look harder for a K900 V8 with VIP package.

DannyK have you try look for a Genesis G90? As long as you can look past their wheels.

They’re essentially Hyundai’s Genesis Sedan V8 (not to be confused with Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe) and Kia’s K900 before Hyundai made Genesis a stand-alone luxury brand in 2015/2016.

Bonus if the G90 has V8 and with AWD:smokin:

My K900’s 275/40R19 rear tires can barely hold with spirited driving.

Never ever buy a German car out of warranty. My buddy tries to be a big shot with his used BMW's. Every three months its another couple grand to replace something. Same thing with the used Land Rover his wife has. Thats why 5-10 year old BMW's are all over CL and FB Marketplace so cheap. The people that know how to own German cars will tell you they are great as long as they are still under warranty. When the get close trade them in and start over again. I would go with the Lexus.

My 2015 Sonata has been a great car except for the engine. Replaced under warranty at 90k miles. My co-workers 2015 Kia just had his engine replaced under warranty a few months back. Solid car up to that point.

I don't understand why people say that.

I've been buying used BMWs for almost my entire driving life, everything from in warranty, certified pre owned, out of warranty, to deferred maintenance shitboxes.

None of them have given me any problems.

People say that who don't do their own work. If you have to take a 7 year old BMW into the indy shop to have work done you better be prepared to open your wallet. Its like my Porsche. Its a toy, so I will do all my own work. I felt lazy one time and asked a respected shop for a quote. Its was over $6k. That brought me back to reality real quick and I bought the parts and a few specialty tools and did the job for $1700. If you are not handy, its going to cost you.

Fixed it. No way in hell that Audi/BMW/Mercedes can compare to the Genesis by Hyundai for anything but snob dick extension appeal and losing days in the shop and thousands of dollars on repairs..
Ever owned one? Build quality is actually outstanding and all the stupid little shit that breaks on your jap shit boxes doesnt on the Germans. There was a major quality shift in the late 2000's on the German cars and they are quite reliable now. Fast, luxurious, and reliable, hard to beat. I put gas in my Audi and it goes:flipoff2:

Its just an old stereotype form the 90s when German cars were over complicated shitboxes that broke down all the time. Anyone saying it now hasnt owned anything new. My local indy Euro shop has rates the same as all the domestic dealers in town. Parts are marginally more expensive. Its all horse shit though as they are pretty damn reliable.

I guess me and alot of other people? I see older ones all over town every day. Nobody is doing major repairs to them because they have zero resale value.

*edit- nevermind... you're in the rust zone. None of them in your area ever had a chance to prove reliable/unreliable

They actually didn't rust that bad, no worst than other stuff. It's all in if the car was cared for, my Toyota is near rust free and 20 years old.

A few years ago we would have them towed in, check the crank to see if it was trashed and push em out back. There was 2-3 out there constantly. Pretty rare we see them anymore. Maybe the cranks rusted out lol

Consumer Reports summary for 2017-2020 model years:

Part of the launch of Hyundai's upscale brand is the renaming of existing models. Previously known as the Hyundai Genesis, it is now called the G80. For about $10,000 less than competing midsized luxury sedans, the G80 delivers just about every feature and luxury attribute a buyer could imagine. Offered with a smooth and refined V6 or a potent V8, the G80 has responsive handling and a comfortable ride, though it can't quite match its German competitors. Our tested AWD V6 returned a competitive 20 mpg overall. Controls are refreshingly straightforward for a luxury car. Rear-seat passengers are pampered with amenities, including seat heaters, and space is plentiful. Most versions come with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring.

2021-2023:

The redesigned 2021 Genesis G80 is based on a new rear-drive platform, with the latest infotainment features, and innovative advanced safety features. It competes with the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series. Beneath the sleek shape is an all-new structure shared with the GV80 SUV. The standard engine is a turbocharged 300-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and the uplevel engine is 375-hp, 3.5-liter V6 turbo that provides effortless acceleration. All-wheel drive is optional. Ride comfort is impressive and handling is responsive. Fit and finish is top notch. However, the infotainment system is very tricky to use. Standard safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and blind spot and rear cross traffic warning. An AWD Sport trim is added for 2022 with optional rear wheel steering and is the only trim available with the 3.5-liter V6.

OP, the Germans do big luxury cruisers like no one else. Fuck the fancy Kia...

We have a Q7 with the 3.0 TDI in it. Great mileage and so far pretty reliable. We havent deleted ours yet, but its on the chopping block soon. I just keep clearing codes for now. So far I know for sure the DEF injector is failing and consuming more DEF than it should and we've had a few instances where the DPF regen hasnt worked right and almost put us into limp mode. Other than the typical emissions BS its been a great engine. Maintenance is low key. Belts, fuel filter, oil. Oil filter is on the top and you can extract the oil through the dipstick tube, IE no crawling under the damn thing.

With an A8L I couldnt pass up the standard 4.0TT though:laughing:
The guy responsible for all the bmw chassis stuff went to Kia with the stinger project though.

Its usually the engine stuff people whine about having issues and costing $$$ in repairs, kinda like how the Stingers eat engines left and right:laughing: Half the puzzle is still only half.

Volvo, comfortable, quiet, sporty-ish with a turbo, cheap insurance.

2016 or older for the stone reliable I5 or I6, not sure they've figured out the twin charged 4 cylinder on the later models yet, they were replacing piston rings for a while.

Bought grandmother-in-law's '05 Grand Marquis, garage queen, with no miles, when she moved into assisted living. Never been a Ford guy, but I've kind of fallen in love with it. Literally (Levigarrett76 :flipoff2:) a couch on wheels, 2 tons, quiet, comfy, and that 4.6l motivates it quite well with only, 239 HP. I get more complements about the Grand Marquis than anything else I drive on the regular, it usually the more urban folks.

Just bought the wife a 2016 v60 t5 platinum.
It's nice.
Same reasons you stated, wanted nothing to do with twin charges hybrid 4 banger. Wanted white block 2.5. wish I could have gotten it with an m66, but the aisin 6 speed is better than the 5 speed slush box by a wide margin

Lots better options for the money than 20 year old euro trash.

The Volvo is a solid option. I had and ‘05 for a long time, before selling it to my FIL. It’s still going with 200k on the clock, with only minor issues (cv boot, motor mount, fuel pressure regulator, etc). Thing even still has the original clutch and front brakes.
