What's new

Fucked up my winch cable

Just got some of this. Looks the same, few different sizes, multiple colors...

Astra Depot Green 95ft x 3/8 inch 22000LBS Synthetic Winch Line Cable Rope with Heat Guard Protective Sleeves All Rock Guard for ATV UTV 4X4 Off-Road Vehicle https://a.co/d/9sRXLIL
And they won't ship to me either.

Somebody want to make some money selling bootleg winch rope in the frozen north?

I am rocking some Amazon rope but I didn’t get a chance to use it in the bush… I did spool it under tension and used a 1 ton CJ that is benching 7000lbs. We had the brakes locked on and pulled up hill. No breakage…

My rope is grey but looks like you are stuck with green

I've had new thimbles swedged onto winch cables a few times. I was able to drive my truck into NW Wire in Seattle's shop close to the machine and just un spool enough cable to reach. Ten minutes, $20, and done! No need to remove the cable from the winch to get it done, unless the guys at your local cable shop are jerks.

Sorry to revive the dead. New winches going on tow rig Warn EVO 12Ks with 3/8" steel cable. I usually replace hooks with clevises, but these Chinese Warns are too small of a loop to take even a 5/8" shackle pin (I'd be running larger ones).

Normally, I'd unspool and take both cables down to the local rigging place and have them swage new bigger end loops on...but they are literally 2.5 hours away round trip. So I'm wondering if I'm an idiot for considering swaging the ends on by hand? I think they have a hydraulic press type unit they use at the rigging place.

So my question is...with the right swaging hand tool....is this safe to do? Amazon has a 36" swaging tool for 3/8" cable for $123: Amazon.com

Sleeves and thimbles too: Amazon.com Amazon.com

Not a fan of synth rope....I know it's less than the cost of these parts.

If youre press has enough balls to squeeze it.

French splice and a collar over eye loop and saddle set anyday.

Ive never had one come apart even just hammering alum collars

I don’t think that’s the tool for the job

I think that’s for electric cable (wire)

Dunno.. didn’t read it..

I’ll stand over here while you test that cable you swaged with that thing.
K.

Just keep in mind it's the same design as the Tyler brand E-Rigging sells for $200.

Since I already knocked down one cheap knockoff rip I might as well contribute another. Because VEVOR.

100 ft of 3/8 synthetic for $75 plus delivery and government extortion.

Edit: safe working load is 8,800 lbs.

Gentleman
I knew how to weave/splice wire rope and braid 3 strand, but never knew it had a name.
French Splice cool
Thanx I learned something today

I love how these companies put the WLL in small print and advertise the ultimate breaking strength instead.

I think it's technically called a Flemish (not French) splice or an "eye" splice....

What I don't understand is if one does one of these splices, what kind of swaging sleeve do you put over it since the typical oval has two ~3/8" (in the case of 3/8" cable) or is it exclusively in the realm of being terminated by saddle clamps?....b/c I don't want those since I can't spool it in as far.

My dad would just a piece of copper water pipe and smash it in a vice or hammer. He would also tightly wrap it with safety wire.

I don't think the clamp is super critical.

We re torque the cable clips on our well rig all of the time. It's amazing how loose they get and still hold, don't slip.

I have a 1/2" zipline @175+' long I did the "flemmish" eyes on, it's not going anywhere without any crimps or swaging.

Not sure how much less secure it would be on a winch eye tho , probably not alot.

Pretty sure flemmish splices and Molly hogan's are considered knots, and aren't allowed in some lifting situations where crimps or Crosby clips are. If I messed up my crimp I would replace the cable with synthetic, but I do carry Crosby clips (saddle clamps) in the winch bag just in case. I have no problems trusting either with my life. I worked in a theater for years with 1,000s of lbs hanging over my head all with crimps and Crosby clips, no issues.

Funnily enough my autism is as such that the moment I heard "never saddle a dead horse" the saying and meaning was seared in my memory forever. But I can't remember my daughter's birthday or my debit cards pins

I'm shocked that no clamp or swage is necessary (though he talks about using the saddle clamps and even just heat shrink) with the Flemish splice.

And yes....he mentions they are not for hoisting.
