Front Axle Work vs Rear Work on a 4X4

I am trying to stay within a budget so I am installing a lunch box locker in the HP44 front and ARB in my full float D44 rear.

My logic is my wife will find driving the 2a more enjoyable with an open rear and the front hubs will make the lock box invisible on the road. When I need 4x4 it’s just going to work and work well.

I bet I’ll be doing a lot of putting around in 2Lo with the D300

How much on-road driving does said rig get?

Once it's back together it will be my daily driver. I hope the TruTrac is better on ice and snow on the road than the Detroit was. I spend about 50% of my time off road with it.

It's NOT a hard core rig.

I put the locker in the strongest diff first. I have a Detroit rear in a 9", Lunchbox front in a HP44 with selectable hubs. Detroit in the rear makes it a little squirrely at times but its just part of the vehicles personality.

Great video but like everyone says every situation is different. Just adding a bit of momentum to this guys scenario changes everything. Once the skinny pedal comes into play I wouldn't want a locker in the weakest diff.

In my steel Willys wagon I had a spool in the rear, Detroit front. I swapped it to spool in the rear, TruTrac in the front I like it much better now.

So you have a spool in the rear of your daily driver?

I had a spool in a daily, and my current rig was spool F/R, is now spool F/ Detroit R

I didn't mind the spool with the daily. Actually it was Lincoln locked, same difference. The philosophy was I was cheap

Current rig got a lot of street time both spooled and with the Detroit. Honestly I'd love to ditch the Detroit for spool again, its predictable. It's either chirp chirp chirp of tires with the spool or bang thunk bang of the Detroit. Was daily driven in the winter with both setups, didn't die, you just understand that its predictable. It's going to not want to turn in 4wd leaving a red light. Romp on it and spin the ass around and carry on.

What's your philosophy/thoughts on why you have a spool on your DD.

I've genuinely curious/interested.

When I built it a Detroit was about 500, the spool that had been gathering dust on the shelf was 85. I lived in WY at the time so I thought I'd give it a try in the winter there. Worked fine for me so I left it in and started looking for a good used Detroit for the front.
