This was burried 5' below what I thought was virgin ground below where a barn built in the 50s stood.... but it must have been fill for the barn.

I have a couple similar. I've used them for moving sheds around and trailer jacks mostly. Pretty "handy" once you figure out how to move the pawls to lower them. When going up they work automatically .

There might be a spring inside for them to work right too.

I'd say it came from the Roaring camp railroads:laughing:
 
Clean it upand check it out.
I've got a Simplex 15 ton railroad jack that looks very similar. Cool old iron.
I'll get some pics when I can.
