What's new

ford 360fe hard starting/restarting

Not just compression numbers but if you are pulling a plug, stroke numbers as well... ;)

FYI... There are clearance issues with stock air cleaner and the HEI. I had to put a spacer and a lifted aftermarket 3" air cleaner on it to make it work.
to make sure it's not a 390?

no stock air cleaner on this one

The carb spacer is a good idea as well, I'll be looking into that

Here's a few of the truck and the dirty ole 360

Very nice

May be a 390 after all i dont think 360’s ever came with 4v?
looks like a cast iron factory 4v intake?

I started to post the same thing earlier. I think all 360’s were two barrels. But it was easy to get factory cast iron 4 bbl manifolds off of cars and swap them onto trucks back in the day.

Still is.

I picked up an 'S' cast iron manifold for my 360... But damn does it run nice with the 450 CFM Holley 4V on it.

That said I have a 390 on the stand waiting for me to show it some lovin'. Prolly get Edelbrock heads and intake to save a couple hundred pounds... like that matters... :lmao:

Hey OP... Update?

It all matters. I remember being told that an FE iron intake weighed 100 pounds. So I weighed one and it’s more like 75 pounds. But still,

From back when I was playing hotrod with old carbureted ford stuff. It was my opinion that a quadrajet was the best fit for for the performance on good FE stuff. The spread bore seemed to be more effective than a square bore carb. But the inverse was my opinion on the 385 series, they seemed to respond better to the square bore carbs.

Without reading all of this here is what I know, 4x4s never came with a 390 it would be a 360 "if" it's original .

Those are really good engines either way, but Fords run more dwell so if the points are crappy or having issues, it's going to have more of a negative effect, like someone stated earlier pertronics is your friend, just put it in the stock distributor, make sure the plate it attatches to is all good .

A compression check is where you start FIRST before trying other things, if the engine isn't making good compression you're just beating a dead horse .

Modern coils are often junk out of the box (chinee)

Old Ford's due to the dwell are harder on condensors as well, but in my experience these either work or they don't, no in between .

I think it is more on the smaller size of the primaries. The primaries on the 450 are smaller than the qjets I have played with, and since the 360 doesn't easily push over 5K I don't think CFM or VE is gonna be in play.

If I had less shit going on I might try to play with this so thanks for adding shit to my agenda... :flipoff2:

ah c’mon I’m a ford nerd and an old school ford nerd at that. I don’t get to talk 60’s/70’s era technology often :flipoff2:

That is all I do... this new fangled EFI and automatgic transmission shit is for kids... ;)

Props to you !
I have a 141 cubic inch ford 4 cylinder that puts out well over 100 more hp than that ol 360, weighs 1/4 of the FE and gets triple the fuel mileage. :lmao: But I still love the old stuff. My little ecoboost Bronco has more horsepower than my DD 460 truck. Will always have a soft spot for the old iron that came first

I get ya... but how many of them will be around in 50 years?

I know I won't be here to find out, but I have learned to be more enthusiastic about the bulk and simplicity.
Obviously in a TEOWTWAWKI madmax situation the 360 is going to be more usable I think. My Bronco will have to go to the crusher long before they kick our ICE engines off the road

Hey OP... Update?
Just started today but it's turning into a multi day project. Interference between HEI cap and temp sender, broken brass fitting, need more fittings, broken temp probe copper tube, which if I'm gonna replace that might as well install the new 3 gauge pod I had laying around, etc, etc

But the new distributor is in

Well there's your problem, at least one of them, an Edelbrock afb . :barf:

jk, to each his own
