My Ram is being a pile of shit. Going to trade it when I get home from vacation.

I'm leaning towards the 5.0. I don't tow over 8k. V8 is tried and true. Less moving shit. I guess it really comes down to the transmission. 6 vs 10 speed. Also looking at both. The truck I like that fits me is a 17 5.0 with a 6 speed but high miles at 95k. Any issues on that motor to last 200k plus? Any pros/cons to the forced induction trucks? Give me your experiences.

I had a 2013 F150 with the 3.5 TT and it pulled 15k no problem. It couldn't do it like my new F450 can but it started and stopped the load well. The later 3.5 TT used port and direct fuel injection so it took care of the intake valve fouling issues. Owned it since new and had 117k miles. Had the cam phasers replaced once but if you shorten the recommended oil change intervals it helped the issue.

I like my 2019 5.0. Pulls my loaded 3 horse trailer nicer than my 95 PSD

The eco boost engines have pretty much proven themselves. 200k with normal maintenance is expected.
Same or more with the 5.0 though and they go cheaper up here. And if you get a wild hair a blower on a 5.0 is freaking impressive.

So I guess get the one you want because I’m no help. :homer:

The 5.0 trucks seem pretty solid. The spark plug set is hilarious. 1 single spark plug wire. Watch your oil level. Because every ford 4.6, 5.4, 5.0......are subject to being oil burners. My boss thought he had some bigger issues. low miles, 5,0, 2800 miles since last oil change.......needed 4 qts of oil. WTF is up with ford?
chevy will have lifter issues, which sometimes breaks a pushrod at the same time, and the DI allows for nasty intake valves.
And dodges are just fag trucks. the coil springs, the lifters, the 8 spark plugs...

I just finished replacing / upgrading turbos, manifolds, radiator and the intercooler on a 3.5 f150. You couldn't give me one of those fucking trucks. I would drive it to the end of the yard and put a for sale sign on it. Every damn thing on them is a pain in the ass to do. Fuck the engineer who designed it. Had a 15 f150 5.0 as a company truck for about 30k miles and liked it.

10 speed. What do those hay burners weigh? Mileage?

Good looking truck.

Here's the truck I'd like. 17 Lariat 5.0 6 speed. 95k miles.

Yeah 10 speed.
I've never took it across the scale so I have no idea on weight.
Mileage is ~13 with 35's

I won't touch a Chevy again. I cannot stand their interior.

My Dodge is actually really nice. I just sense the lifter issue coming.

I bought a 4.6 Ford F150 new in 2006. Drove it 200k plus (Odometer went out, last I saw it was 212k ish). I still see it around town. That truck was extremely slow, but it had a lot of miles with 7k behind it. Pinned in 2nd gear up hills.

I'm sorta in the same boat but mostly looking. 5.0 is what I'm looking at fer reasons you mentioned.

I’m shopping hard for another 5.0 1/2 ton. I like them better than the ecoboost but that’s just me. I’ve had great experiences with 3 5.0’s and would love to have another one now. Only able to find ecoboost trucks at the moment so still shopping.

I feel like there just too much happening in the forced induction trucks.

Yup. Most I'm finding is 2.7 trucks. There are 2 5.0 trucks I'm seriously looking at and probably the only 2 in my area. The 6 speed above and a 10 speed. The 10 speed is not a Lariat, more money, 1/2 the mileage. Good to know on your experience.

My Ram is on 35s and still get 17mpg.

But also have a company gas card and a beater Civic to keep miles off the next truck.
Damn, I'm impressed!
I'm sure I could do better. I keep my foot in it. It's now put away. Time to blow the dust off the ol 87 2wd yota p/u.

I've posted about my 18 2.7 10 spd before. Has 66k on it. Pulls the bronco on a car trailer or several different enclosed trailers no problem. I did have the brake controller added.

I am noticing hard down shifts to 3rd and 8th gear. Almost a klunk on occasion. But only when im babying it. Maybe 2% of the time.

Unloaded it's fast once it spools up. It also kicks ass at elevation. Overall getting 16MPG. But that tanks to like 7 when towing.

Just bought a 2018 f150 5.0 10 speed. Like it so far. Looked at a few 3.5tt trucks but all of them seemed to have cam phaser issues. Make sure you crank a 3.5tt when the engine is cold. If cam phasers are bad they should rattle bad then quiet down.
Ford is supposed to have a tsb on the oil consumption issue for the 5.0 trucks. Keeping a check on mine for now.

Had an 11 3.7 (same layout as eco in pretty sure, no turbo obviously) ran it from 9k miles to 290k miles with oil changes between 3k and 15k miles. Only Had 2 water pumps and regular maintenance. And the fuel pump fuse issue once.

Now I have a 15? 3.5 eco. Started at 70 or 80k, have 220k on it no. Same maintenence, only Had a throttle body to replace ($90 and 20 minutes). I think I have either a turbo bearing or warped manifold/ gasket leak. Though I think it's manifold gasket.

I can't remember the year, but some 5.0s had oblong cylinders? Check into that.

Towing is fine. But like posted, mpg will tank. Did a tow with a 7x16 vnose into a stiff headwind, that hurt.

Regular mog days 16.8? Usually 10-15 over the limit and a decent pace to get there.

Most my stuff I run hard.

I think I want a 5.0. Around here the common truck is a TT V6. There are not many V8 trucks out there.

Drove buddy’s 2018 3.5, was really impressed. Enough so that I went to a ford dealership and asked about at 2022 F150 Tremor but wouldn’t see it till probably next year. A few 2.7s on the lot, one 5.0 and zero 3.5s.

Seems to be a lot 2.7s available. Then 3.5. Then 5.0.

I've driven several 3.5s. They are fast. Much faster than my 5.7 or any other 1/2 I've driven. Just concerned on longevity. Also concerned on buying a 95k 5.0.

I bought a 14 brand new, 5.0 6 speed XLT with some extra options, loved it, fantastic truck. 5 months later I got a 15 5.0 6 speed first of the aluminum 1/2 tons as a work truck. Loved it, fantastic truck. 111,000 miles trouble free. Work replaced it with a 5.0 10 speed 2018 XLT with extra options. It was the first of the 10 speeds. Loved it, fantastic truck. Only thing I didn’t care for on the 18 was the auto stop/start, not because it ever messed up. Just because it never felt normal for the engine to shut off at a stop light. It always restarted instantly when it was supposed to, but I have a feeling that later in life that’s going to become an issue. I really like them.

The ecoboost trucks probably win in a drag race empty against the 5.0. But the 5.0 pulls great and doesn’t lose the fuel mileage like an ecoboost does when towing. My 14 got better fuel mileage towing my rock crawler than my powerstroke ever did pulling the same load at the same speed. I got 12 mpg pulling 8,000 pounds behind the 5.0 for 2000 miles at a time where my psd gets 9~10 pulling the same thing at the same speed. My ecoboost buddies got more like 9~10 pulling their rock crawlers which were all similar setups. 5.0’s are hard to find used though.

I got my 2.7 for cheap so I jumped on it but I’ve put over 120k on with zero problems and it’s always loaded with ~1000lbs with tools, topper ladders and shit in it at all times, I did tune it 100k for better mileage and it woke it up, but it was pretty quick before, I’ve towed bob cats up the Eisenhower with it.. i didn’t push it (just speed limit, which my 5.4 SD can’t do empty) but id guarantee It could do it as well as any Cummins or power stroke powered truck I’ve owned, impressive engine and good mpg. High elevation driving the eco boost is a no brainer.

Great to know. The 95k truck I'm nervous mileage. That's all. I think I'm ahead if it's still available next week.

Awesome!

No real elevation here. 4k at the most. Longevity is my concern. How long do these things last? V8 is tried and true.

Next truck I buy I will drive into the ground and likely give my kid.
