Yesterday during Columbus Day, I made the mistake of going on facebook. The bullshit that flitted through my feed made me realize us Americans are dumbasses. Just like everything else, Columbus day got politicized. I went to college, and live in California, so I have an intimate understanding of the left's hate for Christopher Columbus. Yes, he did horrible things to the natives he encountered. Yes, he wanted money and slaves. No, he probably never set foot on the north American continent. I also saw another disturbing trend- my right leaning friends posting memes in support of Christopher Columbus. It seemed like a knee jerk reaction that just because the left said one thing, it was their sworn duty to say the opposite. This is where I realized we're doomed: If people are willing to parrot shit that is just plain wrong just to distance themselves from the other end of the political spectrum, we've got trouble. News flash- it's ok for the other side to be right sometimes. If a liberal says water is wet, it's ok to agree with that statement, and in fact makes you and your cause look less credible when you instantly deny something that is proven to be true.

A little history on Columbus day: We have it because the Knights of Columbus(A catholic charity organization) lobbied the federal government really hard to make Columbus day a national holiday. Why did they do this? Because they wanted to establish that Catholicism and America went hand in hand as far back as all the other religions that made their way to America, and Columbus was a good catholic symbol. There was no other merit behind it other than that. They made the rest up, or tweaked it to fit their lobbying needs.

I'm here to say yeah, Columbus sucked. I'm also here to say that people can cry all they want, but they're probably not going to get that federal holiday changed until they lobby as hard as the Knights of Columbus did.

All of my public schooling was in California. I remember all that CA history of those nice Spanish Missionaries that build the El Camino Real, led by that saint of a saint Saint Junípero Serra Ferrer. This before we took California and most of the West from Mexico in 1848. We did pay them $15m for California, which I'm sure went right into the emperors pocket.

I'm all for teaching accurate history, not whitewashed or woked, but actual history backed by facts.

I would be perfectly happy with doing away with Columbus day until people started trying to make it indigenous peoples day. They lost, you don't get to celebrate losers (or so the left says about the civil war ).
And boy did it get pissy when I mentioned that the tribes that were in Montana when the white man took it, took it from the tribes that were here earlier. :lmao:
DNA says I’ve got more Neanderthal then Fauxcohantas has Indian, where’s my money and reservation?

If nobody gave a fuck, we would move on.

By posting this, you're doing the exact opposite of what you want to do.

This guy gets it:

Nothing here. Had no idea it was Colobo day

Yes, he did horrible things to the natives he encountered. Yes, he wanted money and slaves. No, he probably
What horrible things did he do?
As far as him wanting money....well, everyone does so scratch that bullet point.
He wanted slaves, during a period in time where it was prevalent, another no big deal.
"Probably"...well, nothing to talk about when it comes to "probably" I guess.

So it looks like there is one thing that makes you say he's bad. I'd like to hear about it.

Cliff's notes:

Columbus was in it to get rich, but aren't we all. The way he went about it was not good. The first tribe he encountered were the Arawak. Turns out they were friendly, to the point that Columbus noted in his journal they didn't have any weapons. They shared what they had with him. Unfortunately for them, they had traded with other tribes and some of them had gold jewelry. Columbus assumed the gold had come from their land and realized he could take advantage of the no weapons tribe that gives everything to others by demanding what they had. Once they had given up what little gold they had, Columbus demanded they get him more, however they didn't have any. At this point he was worried he wasn't going to deliver on his promises of riches to the Spanish royalty, so he enslaved the population, and beat/threatened them to cough up the gold, of which they had none. After killing, mutilating, and beating the Arawak, he figured the gold must still be in the ground, so he put them to work mining for it. More of them died getting beat/worked to death mining for him. When Columbus finally realized there wasn't any gold on that island, he decided maybe he could repay his debts to Spain by shipping the Arawak off to Spain as slaves. Some of the natives tried to escape to the hills, some dug up crops hoping the resulting famine would get rid of the Spaniards, but nothing worked. Over a short amount of time, the population of the Arawak got literally decimated- there was only something like 10% of the population left when Columbus was done with them. Oops.

I'm in it for the marketplace, and up until now I have been able to keep my feed pretty clean of political crap. I must have uttered something about Christopher Columbus near a google machine.

So net/net…. Always be armed
It turns out yes. Or uh.. don't have things everyone else wants? Including your own body. Someone might want your body to do slave labor for them. Also don't have kids. Turns out they're easy to capture and ship off to a foreign land.

And who's to say the neighboring tribe wasn't planning a mass raid the next week to wipe them all out and when he beat them to the punch they said, "hold up, let's see what this pale mofo does first."

Well... Columbus is to say. He wrote down everything that happened. The closest neighboring tribe inhabited other islands. They launched poison arrows at anyone when they approached their island, and were generally competitors to the Arwarks. They were called the Caribs and the Arwarks started rumors that they were mean and are people. Another term for their tribe was...get ready... Cannibals. Turns out once Columbus and his men managed to actually meet them, it was found they were more industrious and civil than the Arwarks. We know this because members of Columbus's crew wrote as much in their journals. However, Columbus used rumors of eating people as an excuse to attempt to sell them as slaves to Spain. It didn't work because the Cannibals actually fought back and the Spanish decided to skip them over in favor of conquering the more docile Arwarks.

Some BS talk at the water cooler about Columbus might've been a Jew & a Spaniard.

Could have been a gypsy- :flipoff2:

Pretty sure it's more about demonizing/hating America than having an actual gripe with Columbus. They want everybody gone. Those terrible southerners, Columbus, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Jesus, and on and on. White man bad.

Well, that's not good. Thanks for letting me know. I always hear blanket statements against him but never heard anyone spill out exactly what made him bad.

I forget some of the details, but the one that stuck with me was something along the lines of him demanding more gold from the tribe leader, and he took the leader's daughter as a collateral. After that some kind of disagreement happened when there was no gold and he cut off one of her hands or some fawked up thing.

It all got written about by Columbus and those he traveled with. Some in journals and some in letters back to Spain. Pretty gnarly.

To me there's a big disconnect in American folk lore about who Columbus really was and what we Americans believe him to be. Almost like a tall tale like Paul Bunyan or John Henry. The Christopher Columbus of American lore is worth celebrating for that adventurous spirit of exploration that we all value. The real man, pretty despicable.

Sorry for all the wordy text. I'm a bit of a history nerd.
