Eaton HO72 Tech Thread

Dude, if you'd just sit back and soak in some of the tech being thrown at you rather than throwing off on everything that isnt a cookie cutter tube chassis, LS, 14 bolt rig, maybe you'd learn a thing or two.

Dude :homer:

Not everyone wants something oddball just to be oddball. Some of us like just going out and wheelin. Then not having to scour junk yards for months to find a part after it breaks. Or having your 2 week long trip that you spent months preparing for, taking time off work, scheduling hotels, ect, to be cut short by a smoked bearing that hasn't been made since the beetles were a new thing.

I like the axle, it's fucking awesome its own right, and I'm glad it works for some people. But I'm with bebop that I'll probably never run one when there are tons of options out there that are just as strong, with far greater aftermarket support.

But anyway, enough derailing. We should just keep this thread about the actual tech.

First thing I said :

Such a shame that aftermarket isn't more developed for this axle.

The axle has a ton of potential.
Now calm down, I'm reading and learning.

i am in the yoda and bebop category, love the axle, love the drop out being huge, love all the cool factors, my only hang up is when i go to search for a housing one might be with in 250 miles. and once in while at that, with that being said ,my buddy 60 miles away has 5, and runs one currently, never seen a issue ever from that rear end, ever. so i know they work. and if he has a failure he has 5 more to dig through.

the reason i keep coming back to this thread is to learn more about these axles so one one or two pop up in my area i know what i am in for. i still might find one go down that route yet.

Would be cool to see you use one in your buggy if you can find one. With a trailer queen you could have a whole axle waiting in the trailer .

Find one with 5.14s, weld the spiders and party. :smokin:

Hey can one of you guys who actually has a factory no spin, look and get the part number off of it. So I no what I looking for if I find one, I no a military surplus guy that says he might have sum old ones but besides spline count and measuring my shaft size I have nothing to tell him to go off of. He’s not the brightest fellow and a part number off of one would make my life easier when asking him to look for me haha also these could b off of nething, all I know is they are pre 70s he says.

Exactly! Why come into a thread about a H072 and immediately throw in "no aftermarket support thats why I'll never run one". Lets leave this type thread for folks that would "run one". If its not for you just scroll on past and dont interrupt the discussion. Its always the same guy in every thread about anything thats not a cookie cutter build throwing off on shit he doesnt understand. Dont believe me? Check each out of the ordinary topic on this forum and see which name comes up saying its a shit idea or wont work.

Yeah Bebop I'm talking about you.

For the record, these are the reasons I wouldnt run an H072 or many of the other oddball combos on here. But rather than coming into a thread and shitting on what others are doing I just read and learn.

If we were all about the easiest way into the woods with the most parts availability we'd all be in the RZR forums.

I haven’t and I don’t know anyone who has except a blazer guy (on pirate he was blazerboy?) who worked at ruffstuff as an employee and had ruffstuff ho72 housings.

I asked ruffstuff if they would make one because they have the files and they said no. They then bitched about how no one bought their HO72 covers they made. People asked forever…well by the time they got around to it they were too late. A guy on eBay was selling heavy duty ho72 covers so most went that route by the time ruffstuff made em.

If anyone has a more street friendly 3rd in the Ohio area, I will trade you for the 3rd out of my 69 dump truck. It’s in the 5s at least. This sucker is slow as hell.

Got any pics? I’d like to confirm it’s an HO72. If it’s out of a dump truck it may be a 110

I’m in central PA, I have a 4.57 third I’d be willing to trade w u if u have 5.13 in urs.

I live in Altoona, if that helps figure out the distance. Where in Ohio do u live?

you know you are correct. and that would work with my front end going to 5.13.

Sounds good, that’s not too far from me. Looks like ho72 to me…

I’ll pop the cover this weekend and count the teeth. In Columbus, Oh
Even easier is to just lift one tire and spin it and then multiply by two. if it doesn't want to spin, good chance there's a No-Spin in it. If I was in a junkyard and didn't feel like picking up the truck, I'd just pop the axle shaft bolts and turn the shaft and count the pinion turns so long as the truck would go in Neutral.

Taking the cover off and reading the tooth count wouldn’t b much work, if it rolls roll it forward or back til u see the numbers on the ring gear. U don’t need to count teeth, they’re clearly marked under the ring gear like my picture in the previous page.

Hey Oreo, got sum bad news, I no longer want to trade. Found another ho72 I’m going to pick up that has the same gearing as mine already w a no spin in it. So I no longer want the deeper gears.

Nbd at all. Honestly hadn’t thought anymore about it. Fawkin midterms.

sorry to cross post, and I know it's a 52, not 72, or think it is anyway, but this guy is in ohio and has a 3/4 ton chevy so I presume 52, but he's gonna scrap it if i don't come save it to keep it from a junk yard. I don't need it, but i'd hate to see it scrapped.

On the note of Eaton axles that are still around, if they haven't been hauled off for scrap by now, some of the dual paddle wheel aerators we used to use at the catfish farms had Eaton either 52 or 72s on them, not sure which anymore. was welded to a frame with a pto shaft attached to the pinion so that it would run dual paddle wheels, so no telling what the gearing might be, and maybe lockers if it wasn't just welded to spool it. I can drive out there one day and do some digging if anyone is interested.
Also saw some with Dana 60s, if anybody wants me to look let me know and I will.

in that other thread, it is confirmed to have a load bolt. no idea on gear ratio, but it has a load boat and is in Fredericktown Ohio
