Eaton HO72 Tech Thread

Really? Do tell...
They have changed and it’s for the worst. You used to order a product and they would ship it out the next day, 2 at most. Even during the busiest of times. Now it takes a week for them to ship something out and when I call to ask for an update they get all irritated and say we’re very busy…it’s like they want me to order from a competitor.

Their sales fucking suck now and this was pre covid that the sales stopped. I’m pretty sure they had some marketing college degree person who doesn’t know shit about 4x4s or the 4x4 market take over from a marketing perspective but they “know marketing.” That’s a hunch but 4x4 people are simple, do a 10% sale. Now the sale is like get 5% off this, if you did a review within the past 30 days, but the 5% discount excludes 90% of what we sell. Just dumb shit like that.

They NEVER sent incorrect parts. My past few orders have been a 50/50 shot on correct or not. Again, non 4x4 people don’t understand the difference on this stuff I guess.

They used to want to accommodate the customer, now it seems like we’re all just an inconvenience.

I’m not alone, I have had 5-6 others say the same thing. Barnes has become my new go to

Picked up a HO72 this summer fo' free, threw it in the axle pile to do something with some day, I couldn't see it go to scrap

As hard as it is for me to say, RS isn't who they used to be. Maybe it's growing pains, but I've had similar issues recently.

I've never thought they were all that great to be honest. Their products are mostly the most basic and heaviest compared to competitors. Like their diff covers, fucking 3/8" plate? Really? Then they stick out so far you can't run anything but high steer with them. They also have messed up most of my orders in one way or another.

One was a hiem steering kit I ordered on a new years sale. Decided to go down and pick it up. Few days later, I get the exact same order in the mail. I did the nice guy thing and let them know. It almost seemed like I was annoying them. She may have said a simple "thanks" but that was it. No apology for me having to take time out of my day to do all the things to get it back to them.

I don't think Barnes is all that great either, maybe better service, but basically the same products.

I like using moto built or goat built when I can.

I've been buying a Lot of TMR stuff this last 4 years or so with better than great service and products along with Moto and Barnes.

New to the forum here but not to wheeling or building rigs, just got my hands on an Eaton ho72. My gearset is 7-37, 5.29, has anyone seen one with this gearset? I never have nor have I been able to find one anywhere on the internet. Not too worried about it as I plan on using it, my real question tho, does anyone here have a factory no slip, the 17 spline they would be willing to part with? I have spare shafts but have had no luck locating a factory no slip, only the 14 bolt flavor. So if you do pretty please send me a dm, I would love to take it off ur hands. Very impressed w the knowledge here on these axles. I’ve wanted one for a long time but man they are hard to come by up here in PA and beleive me I’ve been looking haha

Have you double triple checked your count? 7/36 is 5.14, which is common.

I always have to count about 4 times and use a paint pen when counting teeth or splines :flipoff2:

Makes two of us! I somehow lose my place because I start to think about other things.

On a lot of the HO72s I've had, the tooth count has been stamped into the ring or even into the end of the pinion support. On occasion there would be some without markings but a lot have the numbers inside the ring flange where it bolts to the carrier.

I have the locker you are looking for, stuffed into a third with a set of NOS 5.14s, but I am not certain I am ready to part ways with it.

Yes I double and triple checked tooth count, I’ll take a pic later today and see if I can post it, also marked clear as day 7-37, I was expecting to see 7-36 as u would be too lol I’m new to the forum I don’t no if it’ll allow me to post a pic already but I’ll try today. Alxj64, what do I need to do to sumhow get u to let sell that bad boy haha I was confused by the gears myself I’ll do my best to get a pic on here later. I don’t think this axle was barely used either, the guy a bought it from bought it in the late 70s and never put it in anything, he also didn’t no what it was. Bought it for $30

It’s stamped on the inside of the ring gear on mine

Couple other pics for reference, I counted and there’s def 37 teeth there, have not fully disassembled to count the pinion yet.

That looks like a 7-32 to me. Which would be the standard 4.57 tooth count on these. The 5-53 forge date also indicates that it was out of the year range of the weird extra ratios (early 70s was a rash of 3.90s) and the 5.89 was sometime '62 to '65 IIRC.

Ok damn that looks like a blatant 7 up close in person, I’m at work plowing right now. I’ll do sum closer counting when I get him tonight. That would make more sense tho, either way I’m just pumped to have one

So are you saying 5-53 is the date it was made? That would align more w what the old man told me, he thought it was from a 50s truck as he kept it as a spare for his internationals

Stopped and recounted, my slow ass was wrong it’s def 32 after recounting like 10 times haha going to use it no matter what tho. I’m def going to b on the lookout for more of these from here on out. They are impressively light of a housing for how beefy they are. If it’s truly that old I’m amazed out how good of shape everything inside this thing is in, I use super duty axles a lot and this thing is in better shape than almost all of them I’ve worked on.

you can even chopped the bottom off a bit and even gain more clearance its quite awesome

:lmao:

You're going to fit in great here :flipoff2:

Good news is that you have a common ratio which will be easier to match.

Yeah I’m glad now as I just acquired a 2 door xj, I plan to put this under the back and keep it a little more road friendly than my YJ. This will make matching the front easier, already have another 99-04 super duty 60 laying around to use up front. Def going to chop the bottom for better clearance tho, probably just plate in where the cover was and put a fill and drain plug. Is there really ne need to leave it as an actual cover or do most just weld is right to axle. Guess I could use the bottom of the old cover as a template and make it a cover while I’m at it. Sorta like the idea of just welding it up solid tho haha

It's always nice to be able to just pull a cover to inspect. But with a full floater, it's barely harder to just pull the 3rd. Just the 2 axles and a driveshaft.

Nice I like that a lot, I had no idea people were using them for the front. I majorly dig that, now I’m going to have to hunt down sun more of these haha

Such a shame that aftermarket isn't more developed for this axle.

Ya, but I totally get why it isn't. They stopped making them almost 30 years before big axle became popular for offroad stuff.

I've wondered if dana S1xx 3rds would ever take off. They don't look that much bigger than a 14b and are pretty plentiful in a lot of trucks with a pretty good variety or ratios available.
