Most of the rez's here in NM, and I say most not all since I haven't been to all of them, are dumps. For all the money that goes into them I'd think they'd be better off. Healthcare for them might be good because they sure need it. It's damn rare to see a skinny native not that it's common to see a skinny non-native either I guess. Education and motivation to get off the rez seem to be an issue as well. The opportunity is there, it just seems not as many as you'd think take advantage of it.
As for crime, if you're native there is no crime unless you kill another native. There have been a few cases of natives killing others and it gets buried in the courts or covered up. I worked with natives of the tribes around ABQ and was on multiple occasions invited to go hunting on the rez, out of season etc. I asked and was told the game wardens don't care so long as you're a native or with a native. OK must be a vary different place, and it's too bad the other tribes can't be like that too.
