Well, acrylic would be prone to scratches probably, but then so would the thin wood. Strength wise as far as breakage I would say the nod goes to acrylic. I think I even have a sheet of red on the shelf but I’d have to double check that. Would look pretty sharp though it depends on what color your finished box is going to be. Charcoal grey carpet? White acrylic would probably pop well. Cut the lettering out so the carpet shows thru from behind the shield for the contrast. Red would still look good but would be more subtle as it’s translucent.I think engraved would be perfect I might be able to fill the letters with epoxy or something, I are not super crafty.
As this is a portable speaker box I think acrylic might not take the abuse that laminated wood might?
as for filling with epoxy, I’ve messed with that a bit and you won’t get a deep enough engrave on 3mm sheet to really offer enough depth. Though again I could cut it out of some 1/8” plywood then off attached firmly to the box you could fill the lettering in with epoxy that way.
