What's new

Don't we have a "bitch about idiots on CL or Marketplace" thread?

Put your number out there and block them when you're done. Its not hard
Has nothing to do with it being hard. It's a waste of my time. Email works just fine, it's only old people who get bent out of shape about it.

Just send me an email. It's not hard.

One thing that isn't being mentioned is that with CL, if you only contact by email they don't get your actual contact information. It is semi-private at least in concept. If I have someone who doesn't give me a good vibe I just don't answer. An interesting concept a guy told me was that he didn't answer any CL response to his ad until they tried again. He said it cut way down on the idiots. Just his experience.

They've updated that concept as well. They used to get your email if you chose to respond. Now it stays anonymized and once the ad is gone the anonymized email doesn't work anymore.

Ok that is what I thought. CL seems cleaner than FB. But FB gets alot of eyes on stuff, but with those eyes comes the BS.

That's why I only sell shit on forums. I was only burned once in 21yrs and the user on p4x4 got flamed.
everyone gets flamed in here dummy (or back there)
mandatory participation qualifications

so you got ripped off and nothing special happened :flipoff2:

Those wheels I sold a few days ago, I had them on a Ford forum for free. I got someone asking me to ship them across the country, and some other guy quoting the other guy. Then I got a PM asking for my address, with no reference to anything. I deleted the free posting, then put them on CL and sold them the next day. I'm going to do this in the reverse next time I want something out of my way.

One other nice thing about CL is that it does take some effort, it is a stand alone program so you have to there intentionally. I think those things alone keep the dorks out or at least reduce them. With other media it is just a click away.

I really liked forum selling. It was fun until the costs on shipping went though the roof.

I recently sold my ‘01 Yukon XL 2500 on marketplace. I’ve sold over 30 vehicles over the years. This is the first time I had anyone ask me to bring it to them to look at it. And not just one, three of them. Um, no.

Yep. When I sell stuff it is where is, as is. I don't/won't meet you anywhere, or bring it to you, unless I happen to be going that direction for some other reason and it isn't too much of an inconvenience for me.
Cash only and whoever puts the cash in my hand first will own it. When I was selling a vehicle a couple of years ago, I had one guy come out and look at it and drive it, said he was interested in it, drug his feet on getting the money, then was on the road for a week (OTR trucker, I think). In the meantime I had someone else come out, we worked out a deal, paid me and we were done. Then after a few days the first guy contacts me and said he was ready to buy...seemed kinda surprised/pissed when I told him it was sold.

Retard the flaming here and post 2005 pirate was nothing compared to the early 2000s. So go fuck a blender:flipoff2:

I also got a refund based off that from the OP, unlike the refund your mom refuses to give me:flipoff2:

I'm going to be selling off somewhat of a project motorcycle by the end of this weekend. looking forward to those messages.
I’ll give you a chinese atv that won’t start and an Atari.

Several reasons. I don't like talking on the phone, I don't want people I don't know to have my phone number, I don't want a million robo calls, and the biggest reason is I don't want people calling me at odd hours.

Never been an issue, even back when email wasn't as common as it is now. Sold a bunch of old computer parts and stuff here recently without it being an issue.
Email is NOT common now, you old fuck. It WAS, but it bordering on obsolete on everything but work correspondence, and spam.

I get people not wanting to go to some strangers house and I don't want random strangers coming to mine either. At least for stuff that's easily moved/transported, obviously not always the case.

I'll meet people within reason in public if I can. I'm not traveling across town or anything, but I don't mind meeting someone halfway somewhere within reason. Small stuff I generally try to meet at a local coffee shop or something. Sold some older PC stuff I didn't need anymore recently, met at a local library and glad we did because it ended up being some 16 year old kid.

Ok zoomer. :flipoff2:

The other side of that coin is that scammers 100% deal only through email. If I'm trying to buy something, I want to talk to a real human and get the deal done, not play back and forth email games with some Nigerian prince.

Never had a problem there either. Like I said, I don't respond to anything that seems like bullshit or a waste of time. It's generally a quick back and forth to discuss where to meet and when and that's it. I can't remember the last time it was much more than that or took more than a day or two to get rid of something.

Sold a fairly expensive computer chair last week. Lots of bullshit questions for stuff that was just blatantly in the ad I never bothered to respond to. First person I responded to was a quick back and forth, figured out we were basically in the same neighborhood and I dropped it off at his house a few blocks away like an hour later without any run around or bullshit.

I don't know why y'all are so hung up on this email vs phone thing. I've posted the same thing in every Clist thread we've had here and the old place for years and this is the first time anyone has acted like it was stupid or ineffective. Doing it the way I do has dramatically cut down on the bs dealing with selling stuff online.

i rarely ever sell something but i also use email until im going to meet the person then i exchange numbers

Honestly, because it seems 1) dodgy, and 2) like more work. I want to have a 20-second call "Yep, still got it, price is firm, I'll text you my address.", not spend time thumb-typing on my phone then waiting for a response, then writing some more.

I'm not saying it doesn't work for you, just seems overly complicated.

I learned to not post pictures of parts while they are still on the vehicle. Post an add for a truck bed only and every idiot is asking if it runs.

You know what though, its not a new problem.

I remember placing a print ad in my local paper in 1998/9.
1966 c10 rolling frame only, long wheel base. $xxx.

I got phone calls then asking how much would it take to get running again.

I guess. Just fits my life philosophy in general. People are fucking dumb and I generally am not willing to deal with it. I'm the same way in person. You say stupid shit to me in person and I'll just stare at you like you're stupid til you go away or just walk away from you. We don't get a lot of time in life and I don't want to waste mine on engaging stupidity unless I have no choice.

This place excluded. :flipoff2:

I had a old welding trailer for sale last week on marketplace, had one dude message about it and said he would be over shortly, gave him my address and told few ohter buyers i would get back if sale fell thru, 20 min later had guy pull up, and talk about trailer so i assumed it was the dude i gave my address to, we are looking at it and dude pulls cash out of pocket, just then another truck pulls up and i go see who it is cause i dont get many vistors, new guy says hi im so and so i talked to you about trailer.....im like wait i only gave my address to one guy,why is there two people here?
First dude says o i didnt talk to you i just looked up your address off name and came over........ i was kinda pissed then, dude just said oh well ill take it,and then turned to the real buyer and said sorry dude i already made deal for it........i told him the fuck you did,the og buyer was first in line so he has dibs if he wants it.
Og buyer looks and says ya ill tale it, i told him 50$ less than what the dude who just came over offered, guy was pissed i would t sell it to him just cause he just cruised over with out talking to me first. Told him beat it and your ass is on camera this whole time so dont come back ever.
Who just drives over like that without a little communication first.

That's weird! I've looked people up to see what kind of tweeker I'm dealing with, but I wouldn't just show up...

That's why my email on Craigslist only gets my first name and the phone number on there gets my Google voice number.
For the address I use a random spot in the middle of town so there's no way to get where I am from anything in the ad.
There have been more than a few ads where I've looked up the seller's name, address, etc but I haven't ever used that to go there without communicating first (I guess the one exception would be when I went to look at a car on the way back from vacation and figured out where the guy worked from the number that he gave me to call him when we got off the ferry because we needed an address for the GPS (back in the era of flip phones, dinosaurs and such).
He was whoever still expecting me, just not expecting me to show up where he was.
Bought the car though, then had an adventure trying to find a U-Haul tow dolly to drag it home from there (did you know that you can tow a 1965 Volkswagen bug behind a 2002 caravan?) U-Haul was much happier with that as the towed vehicle then a 97 Volvo V90 for some strange reason :shaking:.

I just don't deal with that shit. I post everything you need to know in the ad with specific information on how I want to be contacted and paid, in English, via email, cash only. If you ask something I missed, I'll happily answer, but if you're asking me stupid shit that's in the ad or nitpicking just to nitpick, I just don't respond. Contact me in a language other than English, I don't respond. Send me a phone number asking me to call you, I don't respond.

Might take a bit longer to sell something, but it's far less headache than dealing with idiots.

I absolutely do not give people my real number either and the Google Voice number definitely doesn't go in ads. You only get that if you're a serious buyer and we're at the point of meeting somewhere.
This. Typically the nit pickers/pointless/all ready listed in add "buyers" rarely end up with a sale anyhow, so why bother giving them much time.

The buyers know what they are looking for, maybe ask a smart question about the item, or set up a time to view it, done.

Its a numbers game sometimes, and I dont play well with people who dont read the add or need dumb/pointless questions answered.

I always meet downtown as well. Mostly because our address isnt listed or googleable, and two, I dont want people at my house.

Hope you like sugar free limon pepino rockstar! :lmao:

I R old people? 38 is the new 70 I guess.

I prefer a phone conversation. Takes all of 5 minutes or less to figure out of the buyer/seller is sketch.
my favorite is
"what's your bottom dollar?"

I almost always respond with
"what's your top dollar?"

which is a quick way to get :crickets:
:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I’ve often lamented everyone losing any kind of haggling skills.
