What's new

Current state of winches?

I’ve been casually looking on marketplace and man people want top dollar for their bullshit.

No kidding! Guy here in town has a warn 10s 89611 list for 1700 now dropped to 1550. Mounted before. Says unused. Screenshot_20220120-175547~2.png

..but...

To be fair I'd try to get a much of my money back as well. Its just a hard sell.

Craigslist and Facebook are completely fucked for buying and selling stuff. If you're buying everything is 50% higher than it should be or people won't even respond. If you're selling everyone wants to offer you half off or flakes on showing up. Part of it I think is the, well I see everyone is asking $100, I'll put $125 for some room. Then later that year, everyone is asking $125, I'll pit $150. Then 15 years later.

The other problem is that lots of people won't even shop new, they just assume it's cheaper used. I know a handful of people who are like, oh I paid $600 for this half used shit because it's all I could find, meanwhile new is $700. :homer:

Craigslist almost seems like it's actually embracing scammers at this point

The new smittybilt seems like it has potential. 7hp motor and 'forged internals'.

I'm not a fan of all the gimicky features but whatever, some people like a cupholder on their winch.

Stop trying to buy hipster shit and sell shit at top dollar and you won't have problems. :flipoff2:

I have a KFI on my X3 and it's been good. The local off road shop recommended it. They deal with a lot of mud riders and they say they have had good luck also.

I have heard bad things about the old style Warn ATV/UTV winches. I haven't heard anything about the new ones and don't know anyone who is running one.

I guess I should mention that my expectations are probably higher than most with a utv winch.

I have a samurai I put track on. I've never weighed it, but it's probably a fair amount heavier than the a 4 seat x3 when I have the cab, doors and everything on. It takes a lot of force to pull it out when it's buried. The 6k viper is hit and miss. I honestly don't think it pulls any harder than the 4k.

I'm curious if the 5500 axon is up to it or not. Maybe I should just go with an m8000

With tracks I assume you are snow wheeling. I would go M8000 since it might the difference between getting out and taking a long, sucky hike home.

I've had the 6k viper and it's mostly been OK. I'm also trying to be wieght conscience and there is a pretty big jump from from a utv to a truck sized winch. M8k is also slow af fuck

I carry 2 snatch blocks a 20' piece and a 100' piece of rope, 30' and 5' strap. I may also add a rear winch. So in short I'm not walking home because of a winch. Worst case you dig, put your traction ramps down (yes they aren't just for over landers :flipoff2:) cut trees, ect. Once you're buried with the tracks you kinda have to dig a little anyway so you don't rip the tracks off. Shovel is really the only thing you absolutely need in the snow.

I have that on the front on my 100 series and the fit and finish is very nice. Looks just like my Warn 9.5TI. I've only used it once and it winched like I asked it to. :flipoff2:
It's been a year. I used it to winch myself off a rock in the river and over some rocks in the snow last month.

This week I've used it twice to winch out my 6k lb capacity forklift out of the mud. Still on the original remote control batteries. :flipoff2:

Installed a smittybuilt 17k on a customers 40 foot tilt deck a month ago. The first hard pull was This week a 4000 pound fueling station. he called to tell me that either position was now free spool. a tear down revealed that outer ring gear which is what your sliding over when you engage the winch was installed backwards from the factory. This only allowed minimal egagement with the gear machined into the case housing. steel ring gear aluminum housing gear. I also found the grease to be sub par for the outside temp of -12 c. cleaned it up flipped the gear and put a ton of low temp moly in there

Anyone running Superwinch? Been thinking about picking up one of their SX series winches. Didn't see them mentioned here or I'm blind af.

Bumping this up. Has anyone added aftermarket wireless remotes? Which are GTG?

They used to be one of the best, but were bought out by Westin a few years back and now they're as good as any of the other off-shore winches.

I have Superwinch Tiger shark 9500. Slow (218:1), but it works. It has a contactor instead of relays, so that's a plus in my book. I bought it off a friend who won it in a raffle. Not sure if I would have bought it otherwise.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but anyone messed with an older M12000?

I got offered a bumper that fits my 97 with a "burned up" M12k for pretty cheap. I'm guessing it probably just needs a new solenoid, but not sure as I've never messed with them.

That’s the reason I bought my superwinch years ago (pre westin) was cheaper than a warn, actual contactor, and was a legacy company, so I figured I’ll always be able to get parts.

Then the buyout.

Considering they don’t make any winches that look like my anymore, I’m probably screwed on replacement parts.

It’s been a good piece, (albeit slow) but post buy out I dunno if I’d go out of my way to get one.

Tbh I haven’t been too impressed with Warn to justify going out of my way to get one. 8274’s are AWESOME but aren’t common here everybody that has one, knows what it is and last M12000 that I tried to rebuild, I was basically told “try to find somebody with NOS layed up somewhere because we don’t support that winch anymore”

Servicing winches seem to part of a bygone era, next winch I’ll probably use a coupon, go to HF, and just get the biggest warranty they offer. I don’t wheel alone, I always keep a come along, and I don’t wheel in the “your winch is the only thing keeping you from falling 500 feet to your death” situations. Plus, when they don’t offer servicing after a few years of ownership. I won’t be as pissed off/disappointed.

Well at least you didn't say you bought it from some asshole. :lmao:

I'm still in the 8274 camp. I've had 3 or 4 over the years with never a complaint. My current one is the 70's era with the Jeep logo on it, which adds street cred. It's still a stock motor but with the solid state relay, works great.

I have a friend who has a couple of the Come Up winches and he likes them. I like the speed for sure. Time will tell on the durability.

Is there a line speed anywhere for that winch?

I found this on another forum. I don't personally have the winch.

That's really good, IF it's true.

Not like the numbers on Chinese stuff are amped up, ever...

There are several solenoids that could be bad. Or the motor. Parts can get expensive if you use the factory stuff. but they are simple as long as they aren’t corroded from road salt.

I like to think smittybilt is the budget friendly warn, with better reliability than the HF stuff. Ive had my gen 1 10k smittybilt on my jeep for probably 10 years now, and havent changed a thing on it. Every time i hook up the remote it just works. Its loud, its slow as sin, but it doesnt stop. I'll also say that it stays under a cover, so no constantly wet environment. Im about ready to upgrade, and a new smittybilt is likely going back on.
