What's new

Cool things you don't need, but will probably buy anyway

Look up cost of deferred maintenance that comes with those cars.

When it comes to those you want to buy the nicest one you can afford. Look up fellow named Matt Ross on YT, he is fixing up a basket case 996 Turbo, an endless money pit.

They're NOTHING compared to a Ferrari or Lambo in terms of maintenance though. As long as you don't have bore scoring or the IMS gone (IMS isn't an issue on the Turbo motors luckily), the rest of it is all pretty run of the mill. I'd take a 996 long before I'd take a F355 or F360.

The image quality isn't as good as top level Leica or Swarowski, but its pretty damn good, and no problem ranging out to 1700, (so far).
I wish someone would make a 12 or 15x range finding bino with a MIL reticle in it.

Im not really sure. There is stuff I would like to buy, but will likely never actually will. It’s not any reason other than that tends to be mo.

Been shopping for the right buggy/rail/baja for a few months now. Need to up my budget a little more before I'm into the ones I want.

So this popped up on an add today, and I really don't need it...but I kinda want one! :flipoff2:

What other cool shit is there you don't need but will most likely buy?

So it looks like you can put together that "kit" for $60 or so from amazon. Parts look identical. I may have to order a compressor and quad horns for the train to upgrade from the ford escort horn.

Ha the Porsche is the go to imo for that, for years growing up there was an 80's(?) 94X odd ball car locally that lived on jack stands in a driveway. I always wanted to stop and offer to buy it but never had the means, of course now that I do it is gone.
had to be a 914/6 - I think those came with jackstands as OEM equipment.

Fun cars even with the 4 cylinder, but usually require a ton of work and rust repair if priced cheaply. Saw a decent one on BAT recently, mid 20's

Basket case 912s are bringing that too. There was one on The Samba for $35k

good friend is an early P-911/912 fan. His 67(?) now has double the original horsepower, just into the 110hp range. We used to do some open road racing in that car, and I have to admit to clenching the seat with my butt once we got over 110 mph or so. Fun car. He was offered over $50K recently - lightly modded, but in fantastic condition.

Same guy bought a 76(I think?) 911 turbo with less than 25 K miles on it about 12 years ago. Done a total restoration, completely stock, just fixed some of the known problems so it can be a driver, not a show car. He has been offered mid $100K for it. Anything 911 late 70's to mid 80's seems to be stupid money.

yeah, i dont know athing about machinery. lesson one down:homer:. ive got another one of those that is shorter and a mill, only do the most basic stuff
I was told not to leave the chuck key in before I ever touched a lathe. Literally the first week running one in machine shop class about 20 years ago I sent one through a wall, lol. You might need to relinquish all your machine tooling to me

This is my standard setup. Bushnell Elite LMSS 8-40 with the Horus H32 reticle, and the Leica 2700 next to it it works well for long range, but I got the Sig Kilo for 22NRL matches and for ranging longer distances that the Leica can't reach.

You looking to get a manx? One of those with a suby motor would be the breastacles.
If i can find one I like, then sure.
Dad and I are looking to get away from the adventure riding. I got run off a forest road and into the woods in UT last year, and dealing with the big bikes off road is just getting cumbersome with all our camping gear for 10+ day outtings.
We're going sandrail/manx/baja style. Something we can do 2000 miles in, at least half of which being dirt. Still have the wind and elements in our hair, but a bit safer. Wife is excited about the possibility of taggging along sometimes too.
Rail/baja/manx will be able to go anywhere I can go on the loaded GS, if not more places.
Dads already got his in the shop prepping it.
I'm just saving my pennies until my savings account is high enough that I don't have to drain it uncomfortably low. :grinpimp:

Never should have sold my '67. Damn pregnant wife. Damn 2 seater impractical for a family car. :mad3::laughing:

They're super fun cars, that whole "driving a slow car fast thing." I've been hunting for a project 912 for years.

I have a Leupold MK4 with the TMR reticle that I use to use for matches but only looking through one eye all day was not fun. I switched to Bushnell Forge 15x binos. I rarely range targets at a match so I keep a Sig Kilo range finder in my bag. Binos with a reticle and range finding would be sweet for me.

I sold mine right before the prices got stupid. Paid $6k for it, put another $6k into it, (3.2l swap, paint, interior, 16" wheels, etc., had the P-car hookup for parts back then), and sold it for $17k, so I got my money out of it and got to drive it for 20 years, but damn did I leave some money on the table by missing the big upswing.

Hate me, but I just can't like that Targas.

I got the older one that a model or two before that. I loved what it could do. I used it when I was a thermoforming engineer, I could predict temps and sheet thickness on the fly and catch cooling line clogs and isotherms before they were a problem. They did an app update recently and it doesn't want to work right, but I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat.

They're love 'em or hate 'em cars for sure. I drove a cab one time with the top down, but I felt like I was in a parade and kinda Porsche owner douchey, but I still wanted the open air sometimes so I settled on a Targa. Drove it from Las Vegas to Truckee one time at night, that's a drive I'll never forget.

How can you not have a train horn when driving your train around the back yard :lmao::flipoff2:

My budby put one in a sammi. he said he'd do a 4bt next time because it'd be quieter.
A 4bt would be an awesome powerplant in a sami if the performance metric was the body's ability to shake paint and do stoppies :flipoff2:
My 22re is just as loud as an ALH but with the added bonus of a pathetic amount of power. :flipoff2:

I also have the option of a BRM for $1000 instead of the ALH and that would fix the noise "problem" if you really want to call it that. :flipoff2:

You have me beat on the $800 04 Suburban I picked up for similar reasons.
Please tell me you're putting a 5.3 in the 4runner. If you do that and I do the ALH we need to get NM Ultimate Adventure off the ground sooner than later!

That is the plan. 5.3/4L60/something for the tcase. Also have a GM D60 for the front and a 14 bolt for the rear. Once snowmobile season is done I'll be starting on the project.
