Willys CJ-3B Engine with the new overhead valve arrangement dictated a much taller head to accommodate the intake valvetrain, hence the need to stretch the hood, cowl, and grille to fit the engine in the Willys chassis.
Whats goin' on with the covered dune buggy?
This place does restoration gigs, just drove by & tooka pic of the Plymouth-What's goin' on with the covered dune buggy?
The CJ-3B has/had a 4 inch higher hood to make room for the then new overhead valve engine. It was a stop gap measure to fit the bigger engine into the old CJ-3A body until the M38-A1/CJ-5 body came out. That last pic is cool as fuck!
Is there a purpose for the high hood willys? Or was it just aesthetics?
The Mitsus are neat, diesel 5sp. Saw one for sale last year and pondered a bit..The CJ-3B has/had a 4 inch higher hood to make room for the then new overhead valve engine. It was a stop gap measure to fit the bigger engine into the old CJ-3A body until the M38-A1/CJ-5 body came out.
People thought they were ugly and the model was much aligned, but I really like them and would probably resto-mod one with a large engine just to drive around.
For a "rare" model, it had a long production life and was licensed to other companies as well. You could buy brand new Mitsubishi- built versions in Canada up until 1998.
If they had raised the fenders up to match no one would have noticed. The CJ-3B has/had a 4 inch higher hood to make room for the then new overhead valve engine. It was a stop gap measure to fit the bigger engine into the old CJ-3A body until the M38-A1/CJ-5 body came out.
