He said I think the decomp button was in when I messed with it at first. Saw is in fairly good shape for being 30 yo. He's an hour away so it'll take a bit of planning to meet up with him. Price is more than I had in mind but there aren't many nice 0 series saws out there. Looks like they only made the 046 from '96-01 according to the Goog.

There was an auction lot of 6 saws and two leaf blowers on purple wave that ended last week. All non-running and located down in Hutch. One was an 026 another was an 044. The rest were 290's and 311's.

I figured go about $450 on the lot and spend the next few months getting them running and listed on FBMP. The winning bid was $1265 plus a 10% buyers premium. I guess I'm way off on the price of non-running saws.
 
holy hell.
only saws I would have been interested in were the 026 and 044. the rest of them are homeowner grade and I am a snob like that. lol
 
044 is a great saw. I have one that my dad bought new.
I have an 026 that I bought used 7-8 years ago now. Gave $150 for it. it's my go to unless I am felling or bucking.

Jebus. I have a crate with all of the worst looking saws from the big haul I brought home a couple months ago. I think there's 20 total in there......an 021, 025, 038, a few 271's, 291's, 250's, 251's, 311, 170 and then another dozen or so that are torn down that I couldn't immediately ID.

Reached out to a couple of the "I buy saws" people on FB and they all offered me a couple hundred bucks for the whole lot. :laughing:

Several of those were fetching a couple-few hundred bucks a apiece as complete, non-runners on ebay the last time I looked.

Still loving my Stihl MS500i, 28" lite bar on it, and has cut at least 30 cords of firewood so far. running in temps from -30c all the way to 35c + Cutting mainly douglas fir, spruce, lodgepole and Ponderosa Pine. Starts easy, and just works. May get a longer bar for it for some of the big 40"+ dead douglas firs.

I don't even take out my other saws anymore, even for a small 6" tree other than my small MS170 when out side x siding.

Hows yours on fuel? My 500i is thirsty. It goes through what seems like 1.5x what my 046 does.
 
I remember the 044 magnums being a popular saw around here, 036 as well.

I am amazed how quickly I hear the fuel filter hitting the bottom of the tank.
Went through 4.5 tanks Sunday morning 9-11:30 doing trail work. Not like someone was just feeding me logs to buck. 500i is a fuel heavy saw.

I think they went for full power on the 500i, and without a carb to chill the intake charge they have to run a bit richer to keep from detonating.

Send it off to Red Beard to get ported and rebuilt.

The 362 suffers from being down 1.5hp on the 462 while being less than a lb lighter.

But, I see climbers that like them ported with a 22-25" bar for use in the trees. So they must care about the .9 lbs

a lot of this.

I have a sentimental attachment to my 044 since Dad bought it new. I prefer the oil and fuel caps on the 0 Series. i like the flat top shape as well.

So yea pretty much an OBS saw. lol
 
got an 028 AV super for 20 bucks
put gas in it and blew out the air filter, started right up and the chain was even pretty sharp (completely at the end of its sharpening life, though)

what's the super mean?
I know johnsered's "turbo" means it uses the flywheel to pre-filter the air going to the carb, like partner's "active"
same deal?

Google says 028 was 47cc, super was 51.5cc
So 4.5cc more super duper! :flipoff2:

I have run many gallons through an 029 (54cc). They're a nice truck saw.

Same ****, red levers are just the earlier versions of some of the 0 series saws, some of them started out with black then went to red for a while too. It's just weird saw legend/beliefs. The holy grail to some folks is a red lever, slant fin 10mm 044. Does an 046 make more power in the same size of saw? Absolutely. Do they care? No.
 
There is a slant fin red lever 044 on FBMP semi local to me. I don't get the red lever mystic but I do love my 044. it's a normal black lever though.

028s are good limbing saws. nice and light and handy. You def got a deal on that for $20. is it beat up? why so cheap? old guy just wanted rid of it? Widow clearing out tools?
 
Helped my friend clear a lot of wood for his dad. Not that I’ve used one much, but I didn’t have a chainsaw. I’m an avid “buy tools that help me do things” guy. My friends dad paid in cash, and I decided that I’d buy myself a saw. So used some of the money I was paid and bought a piece of ****. It sat. It sat. It sat. I’ve been hammering out Outbords and decided that now is the time.

Bar oil tank was leaking. Gas tank leaking. She was a heavy breather. Crank bearing and seals shot. All around used and abused.

Stock was a 48mm head. It had a 50mm on it. I decided to go big or go home…stuck a 52 on it. Did the seals. Bearings. Body. And updated the cc’s on the side accordingly.

was at the scrapyard in a blowmolded stihl case
guy there gets overwhelmed with all the **** that comes in, he can't even keep up with cutting up the air conditioners, much less selling little ****
usually looks at what I toss on the scale and says something like "well, if I run it over with the skid steer it'll be worth 300 a ton"
 
not sure if this deserves it's own thread or just put it here since this seems to be the firewood related equipment thread.. I am looking at cutting and selling firewood as a side gig. i've got plenty of saws but no splitter. Have used splitters in the past but just the basic single wedge I beam constructed style. No log lift or 4 or 6 way wedge. Buddy has a Swisher 27t? i think that I can use all I want but it's a two man job to load the big rounds and I will be mostly doing this solo.

That said I am looking at the Full Boar 35 ton with 2/4/6 way wedge with hydraulic height adjust and hydraulic log lift. Have watched several videos on YT and people seem to be happy with it for the money. Not it's not a Timber Wolf but it's also 1/3 the price. I can pick one up from home Depot for $4k OTD and put it on my HD card with 0% for 12 months. yes I know it's not really 0% since the price is a little higher than buying other places..

By the time the log lift cycles and then the splitter cycles, that’s a lot of time invested into splitting enough firewood to payoff the machine and get to a point of operating profitably.

ain't you got a welder and something you can grab hydraulics off of?
it's real hard to do worse than standalone homeowner offerings
