Canyonlands NPS Threatens to Fine Subaru Driver for Driving on "4x4" Road

How the hell does that work?
I was told by the locs down there that I shouldn't get caught driving around and throwing straps on people who are stuck (I used to do it for fun and free beer) because the ranger will write me a ticket for that.

There are a bunch of incredibly stupid rules out at those dunes though, mainly due to the shrinking size of the area and growing number of users. Also there are only two ways in or out and both controlled by a ranger manning a state parks kiosk, so they can enforce some pretty dumb stuff.

I once got pulled over for driving down the beach getting sideways back and fourth at about 15 mph. The ranger who pulled me over told me this was because that part of the beach is considered a legal road and all traffic must abide by standard traffic laws. In my case he could have written me a ticket for reckless driving. :shaking: For those that know oceano- this was on the opposite side the creek from the ramps.

Search his name and USFS and there's no shortages of threads about him on any outdoor forum you can think of.
he was disliked by the public, the Sherriff's department, CHP and most of the Forest Service.
he would cite locals, driving on the freeway or in town
he would cite Forest Service personnel while on work
he cited me for removing fallen wood, while cleaning a campground that I had a letter authorizing the work.

one comment I heard about him was:
"that guy is going to get himself shot"
and it was said from a USFS employee

I got a ticket for 85 in a 15 on my quad way down by the fence line.

I've also been warned several times about pulling people out by ricky ranger, Its because the local wrecking crew makes money doing it under permit.

weird. I've wondered on alot of the recovery youtube videos, why one of the 900 other people that were there didnt just pull the guy out.

Busted a fuel line on my jeep running a bowl there back in the day(full bump was a little farther up than I had anticipated ),my buddy who lives just down the street advised me to wait smuggle the jeep out under the cover of darkness. Waited until that evening, and he and his brother in law towed me down to where everyone camps, and then loaded it up on a trailer and drove out as though it had come in like that.

It was the biggest bunch of BS to move a vehicle 2 miles that I have ever encountered before or since. I got yelled at by the Arnies towing guy after he saw me take two seconds to strap an old f-150 that got high-centered on a razor back. I told him they would have dug it out rather than cough up any money and he left in a huff.

As far as expending resources, don't they just call a towing company to fetch you? And fine you per day for abandoning if you don't?
And the tow company charges you ass rape level money because you’ve “inconvenienced them”. The employee enjoys these tows and the company gets cool videos/pics for Facebook page and YouTube clicks.

Are you retarded or just ignorant with greater than average stupidity?

Have you ever actually driven a modern vehicle that wasn't some open diff FWD commuter car off road?

50yr of progress adds the fuck up.
you do know that they just got a warning, not a citation, right?

Either "Paid a Deposit" on the phone, or "Wanna be Youtube Famous" and will turn down offers of help from passerbyers.

I got it! I'll replace my Subaru emblems with Ford's blue oval and slap a couple 4x4 emblems on. The majority of officials I've crossed paths with can't discern the make or model of most vehicles without seeing the emblems
That’s actually brilliant
Edit: off to junkyard for random makes/models to fuck w/ vehicle id lol

Anything from the 2010s hexagonal grill era can easily pass as a 2010s Ford

Get shot.

It's not about the warning or citation. It's about the logic they're using to write it in the first place. Everyone else understands this.

pedantry is no way to live.

This is the first I have heard of this. I have been going there off and on since '04 and twice a year since I got another 4x4 In '18. I have pulled out dozens of strangers. Not just pulling out my group, but complete strangers, often times down to the wet. Never had any problems. Pulling out people is a big part of the fun.

When I started going to school up here in 1998, my roommate was from Arroyo Grande. His parents lived one street off of Grand, so you could pretty much bust a left off of his street and drive straight down to the grover beach ramp. Of course all the locs knew that's a waste of time because you have to drive 15mph on the stretch between the two ramps, so we'd drive down to the Ocean ramp off of Pier ave. to get on/off. We spent a lot of weekends staying at his parent's house, and hitting the beach. Over the years we even showed a bunch of our college buddies how fun it was and for a while we had a pretty legit group of rigs and buggies and motos/atvs that would all go. My roomie and his brother were the ones the clued me in that you don't want the rangers or the two tow companies to think you're pulling people out. Despite that, we'd all cruise around and find stuck vehicles and get them out constantly. Looking back through the archives, I think our last big trip out there was April of 2005. I still remember getting yelled at by an Arnie's tow driver because he thought I was taking his business. I don't know how it is now, but back then they'd cruise around the dunes just looking for people to drag out.

I tried to take the kids back for the first time last spring on a trip down the coast. We were "camping" at the Pismo Sands for two nights on our way south and I had flat towed our TJ. There are a bunch of stupid rules now, and there had been a big storm so apparently the rangers closed the creek crossing(used to be if you felt you could make it, no one would try to stop you). We got wind from my buddy who still lived in the area that they were going to open up and let people through at lunch on the day we were there. Bunch of locs showed up, and some other people camping as well and we all stood around and waited for the all powerful rangers to bless us permission to cross. They never gave it. To keep the kids happy, we drove around it the deep sand up away from the water for a little bit. Pismo feels like a shadow of its former self now with all the rules and closures. Rooting for the Friends of Oceano Dunes(Friends of Oceano Dunes – Access for All) to win their fights. Need to take my kids down to see the spectacle still.

Photos for fun:

While waiting, this dude pulled up to cross the creek. Water level would have put his paint matched rascal underwater. I told my wife if we all get to cross, we're waiting for this guy to go first so I can see what happens.
