Canyonlands NPS Threatens to Fine Subaru Driver for Driving on "4x4" Road

But you get to enjoy that "island life" for those if you that are into that sort of thing. I lived in Victoria for a year about.....34 yrs ago (FML! It pains me to say that) That was just long enough to discover I don't like island life. I loved heading out to Port Renfrew and Shawnigan Lake areas, exploring in my 82 Yota or my Honda dual purpose XL350, but the whole living on an island just seemed so restrictive

I'm in central saanich now, but trying to get transferred to our up island facilities. Being north of the malahat is a different deal. As it is we gotta drive to shawnigan or sooke at a minimum to do anything motorized, or hunt. Campbell river north the gates are pretty much open.

I get how it would seem restrictive, and I haven't been off the island since 2019 I think? But there's so much to explore here too, I've barely even scratched it.

Unless you have basically none ground clearance matters a hell of a lot less than approach/break-over/departure angle and none of those mean shit if your garbage is lifting a tire on a washout.

Didn't we just have a thread about why humvees suck?
Meanwhile I drive old open diff full size pickups on steep rocky rutted roads passing dozens of AWD Subarus and Easter egg SUVs that had to pull over and park and walk rougher stretches as the "drivers" stare incredulously at my antiques cruising on by.:flipoff2:

The rangers are probably sick of having to tow people out. I totally sympathize with them, as I've had to help out a few poorly equipped people on our local public lands in the past as well:

Someone said they were tired of expending resources recovering other AWD rigs getting stuck. Who knows. Sorta has some merits and then doesn't really have any either.
I'm sure they are. But this is akin to wanting to ban guns because of criminals. I'm fine with making recommendations for equipment to travel on a road and then fining the shit out of people who have to be rescued due to operating less than recommended equipment. But fuck right off from coming after people who navigate the road just fine through skill (or dumb luck, either way) with less than recommended equipment.

Neither, that’s why I can pilot a clapped out open diff rig
So then all else being equal wouldn't you do better in a more performant rig?

Some of y'all haven't done dumb shit in a rental in decades and oh boy does it fucking show. :shaking:

You actually bring up a good point. I haven't had a good time in a rental in ages. I was hoping for something exciting when my truck got hit(also known as any vehicle with an ebrake), but their insurance has been dragging their feet and I don't have that policy on mine.

I duck duck go'd that road and from the first glance pics it is certainly no Little Sluice. Anyone been on it ?

hasn't all of us been 4 hours off a road taking a lunch break along the trail on some mountain top, and some pot heads in a full sizes 2WD astro van came bouncing by give you a friendly wave and not even slow down:laughing:

second question, what if I don't have it in 4WD because some of us like a challenge, you know like people who want to try a 4x4 Trail, is that a strongly worded email, or a ticket?

I've not, but the guy in question drove it, according to the article I read on it several months ago, the whole way through, in a Subaru. That proves to me that he was fine to be there; if he'd needed rescue, the pricetag of that rescue should serve as punishment/deterrent enough. There are several 4x4 trails in Colorado posted with signs saying things like "minimum tow bill past this point $500" that seem to work just fine, reality is probably into thousands, and if you don't pay, they (tow company) keep your car.

The first time I went over mosquito pass, we followed a Subaru up it for a while. They got stuck in a couple snowdrifts, we pulled them out, snow got deeper, they ran out of confidence and turned back. The world balances without needing to levy fines.

Or when you're deep into where you shouldn't be come across a couple dirt bikers who also shouldn't be there going the other way.

FWD or RWD shitbox on a "high clearance 4x4" road makes for an easier recovery than a rig fit for a rock crawling trail on a rock crawling trail

People seem to be forgetting the Driver gets a vote as well. This whole concept is stupid. Its not really more resources unless there is an injury accident or something that requires investigation(s). Otherwise a stuck rig is recovered by either a private tow company I thought was the usual. But regardless it shouldn’t make a shit bit of difference. If someone becomes a trail tampon on a trail that is rated for 4x4 rigs make them pay for all costs.

As to trail damage thats how many of the “good spots” got created 40 years ago at least around here. That and water run off on hills

Here's the description from Fun Treks/Charles Wells that publishes many popular trail guidebooks for Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and California:
A great trail if you are a newcomer to 4-wheeling. You get to experience driving rocky terrain, but with all the harder spots improved just a bit by the park service. The trail is extremely convenient, located immediately behind the Needles Visitor Center in Canyonlands National Park. Park entry fee required. The end of the route features a high, dramatic overlook of the Colorado River. You can take a short hike to Lower Jump and see a tall waterfall if water is flowing in Salt Creek. Mostly easy, but with a few rocky ledges here and there to add some challenge. If you go slowly, the trail is doable in a stock, high clearance 4x4 SUV. There is a parking area at 5.2 miles if you want to walk the hardest part of the trail.

You would think Subaru USA inc might at least flinch.
Doubt they care- they've got a bazillion influencers posting pictures of awkwardly lifted crosstreks with bolt on tube bumpers, a gas can, and a snarkle parked on sunset soaked dirt turnouts all over the country.

At Pismo it’s “$300 please”.

Not sure of the actual fee but the Rangers don’t yank you out of you bury your junk.
I don't know how it is now (I'm assuming it's gotten worse), but back when I went a lot, the park service sold contracts to towing companies for the right to recover a rig. It was Arnie's and one other back then. No other commercial tow companies were allowed to tow people off the beach and would be fined if they did. It also led to the two tow companies getting hyper-sensitive about people helping each other recover out there as well- you could get busted for towing a stranger off the beach and back up to one of the ramps into town.

Looking at this page (California State Parks) it appears that there's only one official tow business now.

On my way to the local annual event in Logandale, I spotted a dyke BLM ranger high centered, so I turned around and pulled her off the little hill. Next day she was harrassing wheelers on specified trails. I reminded her that I had to pull her wide ass off a little hill that anyone with any skill would not have gotten stuck on.

Never again.

It's the shoulder thingy that goes up.

She is dead thank Gawd. :flipoff: Fuck. Line em' up. Ginsberg, Feinstein, Biden, Carter. Carter was removed by ballot, Biden by Coup, and Feiny & Ginny by death while serving.

How is McConnel (twitch) doing ?.
