Cabin Build Thread

Walking the property this spring the dog pointed 6 grouse and 8 woodcock. I finally had to leash the dog to get out of there. There is thousands of acres of state and county forest land that is managed for grouse and woodcock within a 30 minute drive.
Can i be your friend?
I will bring beer and food in a nonsexual manner.

I have come across some pretty cool ones. Even some that are two A frames and connected by a center conventional framed section.

I think you need to do a 20*24. :flipoff2:

Something for drinking, bathing, etc.
Nothing yet. Will have a well in the future. Looking around most of the wells in the area are shallow. Less than 100' and most in the 50'-75' range so should be pretty in expensive to put a well in. Its also all sand, so I might try to drive a sand point.

There is electric available at the road.

I would frame it bigger and use the extra space as storage. That also gives you the ability to expand if you ever want. You can never have too much storage space at an outdoor adventure vacation house, especially when you have 4 full seasons. Extra coats, boots, skis, socks sweaters, blankets ect. Take up space either in the tow rig or the house it’s nice to have a space to pull all of that stuff,

Isn't that what the school bus is for?

Cool plan. Why put your cabin in the mature pines instead of one of the recently cut areas?

I'm not an A frame fan, but if you like it run with it.

It's what I'd do. I mean it's really no big deal we're changing his budget from $30k DIY to $180k and bring in the trucks. Not my money... I assume he's good for it.

This guy gets it. Budget is more like 6K for the A frame.

Your kayaks and grill and patio furniture and lawn care shit will last a million times longer if you can keep them under cover except when in use.

Just build cupboards along the bottom 3-4 feet of the wall on the inside, square things off and gives you tons of storage in an A frame.

It's 14' x 16'

About $1,800 in lumber
$800 in windows and doors
$700 in metal roofing
$500 in siding
So dried in for $3,800
Ok, you gotta explain the hookup on some of this because if you're just buying this stuff at the store I think you're about to get your feelings hurt.

About $1800 in lumber- Uh... yea... that don't sound right

$800 in windows and doors- $800 in a window and a door

$700 in metal roofing- so you're getting a free metal roof, and giving a nice tip to the guy who gave it to you?

$500 in siding- okay, totally possible

So dried in for $3800- is it just going to be staked to the ground like a tent? Because you didn't mention concrete, dirt work, beams, and there's zero $$$ in your lumber fund for the floor

Did you miss the part about 14' x 16'? This thing is small. Basically a hard sided tent. The whole point is to build something quick and cheap to have a place to stay at the property. While saving funds for something larger in the future.

Its a post and beam construction. Three 20' 2x10 sandwiched together to make the beams on posts with sono tubes. No dirt work needed. The spot I am going to put it is basically flat. Post height can be adjusted to make up the slight difference.

The rest of the structure is a series of 9 A's. Two 18' 2x8's for the side and a 16' for the bottom chord that serves as the floor joist. So $500 worth of 2x8's for the structure and $150 for the 2x10's Add in floor sheathing, wall, sheathing, 2x4's for the end walls and you get to $1,800

24x26 single hung windows are $99 at menards. New prehung entry door is $350. So three windows and a door is $650

3' x 18' sheets of metal roofing are $55 at Menards. Need 12 sheets so $660

He is not building a forever place
Just temp.. ..
Hell i would build it on cmu's
With #6 rebar pounded in the ground.
3 on each side to keep it from getting flipped over in the wind.

Your problem here is thinking this is your build comrade, now that you've posted it in Shit Shit, it's OUR build. :flipoff2:

But keep the pictures coming so we can see what you do. :smokin:

Ok, you proved me wrong. Those are good prices. I can barely build a 2-car carport right now for $3800.

Go for it!

Over the last month I slowly came to the realization I have no time this fall to build something on a property that is three hours away from home. looked around on marketplace and found this camper for $1,500. No leaks and everything works, but the inside is in pretty rough shape.

Spent the last couple of weeks tearing out the junk, cleaning, painting, new floor. Tore out the banquet thing to make some more room.

Built a new smaller table and benches and then some ikea chairs.

Wife is working on some curtains and cushions for the benches.
