Friday we closed on 60 acres of vacant land in Northern Wisconsin. The dream is to build a cabin for the family. I'll use it as a base camp to bird hunt out of in the fall and enjoy in the Winter snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Just a place to escape to.

Here is the property. Its mostly aspen that was clear cut about 10 years ago and is regenerating nicely. This stuff grows quick and in 20 years it will look like a forest. There is about 5 acres of plantation red pine near the road that was planted about 35 years ago. I think that will make a nice spot for the cabin. There is another section of red pine that was clear cut about 5 years ago and replanted. It looks pretty bare right now.

There are two nice logging roads that for a Y shape across the property.

Phase 1 is going to be to build a small A frame cabin. About 14' x 16'. Something quick and simple to build that gets me a spot to sleep. In a couple of years we can build a larger cabin and the A frame can serve as a bunk house / guest cabin type of thing. I'd love for my Daughter to be able to bring friends up and for them to have a fun place to stay.

I hope to get started on this in August and have it weatherproof and livable by this fall.

Awesome! Keep the updates coming. I want to do the same thing but prob with a smaller plot of land.

i would suggest to skip the A frame and do a regular stick build. every A frame i ever stayed in seemed to waste lots of space. i went with a little salt box style for mine with extra thoughts on making it fire resistant and lots of insulation.
and congratulations on getting the land.
Agree with this. Great property. Rethink the AFrame.

^^^ x2 on an A-frame. Rented one for a couple of years once. They look cool and all but there's just so much wasted space. And wasted materials I see during construction. You could have like 30% more usable floor space with the same amount of materials with a regular pitched roof.

Back 30 years ago the one I rented, the insulated walls always had issues. But that was before spray foam too.

But on the other hand, if you see lots of snow, then the steeper pitched roof would be great for snow maintenance. Until it piled up around the foundation.

What roofing and siding do you plan to use? Can't say I've ever checked out an A-frame built with a crawl space before.

Will it ever see plumbing or electrical? If so, they are both A-frame challenging as well.

not enough snow to justify a frame. Shit last winter the trails were maybe open for a few days up in tomahawk. 45 mins south by me they were open zero days.

I've thought about the A frame a lot and want to do it for this first phase. I agree they waste space, but I don't really need space and I like the look. This thing is only 14' x 16'. Enough for a bed, a place to sit, and a counter top. The tall roof of the A frame will make it feel larger inside and less like a shed with a bed in the corner.

I think the A frame will give it a unique look, will be quick to build and get weathertight and won't look like a shed when it is finished.

The main cabin will be more conventional construction.

It's pennies to go out just 4 more feet. Spend the $1.75 and go 8 more feet.

Where abouts in wi?
Got any sand Panzer can mine? :lmao: A big Bulldozer or Wheel Loader would be cool to borrow. :homer:

I love the idea, I'd just add a larger porch onto it and move the front window up for more natural light.

Yes! I want an A frame in the aspen trees. His sounds way to small but what he has in mind is more like a hard sided tent
That's exactly right. I looked at a cheap camper, or wall tent on a platform. I figure I can build the A frame for about the same as I would pay for a camper and it will last much longer and serve a dual purpose as a bunkhouse / guest cabin when the larger place is built and be more comfortable than a wall tent.

i think i had 4 days in mine to get it into the dry. 2 story 12x20, but i had an excavator and a skid steer to help.

and A frames suck, change my mind!
Would you still hate it if it was huge? I stayed in one for a week that left a big enough impact on me that I think I want one. But it was big. Even the loft was usable even for big guys.

I have come across some pretty cool ones. Even some that are two A frames and connected by a center conventional framed section.

That place has to be full of grouse and seasonal woodcock :smokin: Throw in a couple of food plots and some soft mast trees and your in business.

If bugs are as bad there as in the Michigan U.P., build in a screened front deck. Got wolves :flipoff2:
Walking the property this spring the dog pointed 6 grouse and 8 woodcock. I finally had to leash the dog to get out of there. There is thousands of acres of state and county forest land that is managed for grouse and woodcock within a 30 minute drive.
