Broken Yukon Grizzlies When Axle Lets Go?

Fwiw, the Yukon hubs are an absolute bitch to unlock on a spooled axle… they are very tough though.
Good to know as I just started to seriously look into pricing it out.

What's the process you've found most successful? I'm assuming back and forth and maybe trying to steer (or having someone do that carefully while you try to turn the dial)?

Is locking them just as difficult?

Locking is no problem as you are just preloading a spring and the dogs will line up as soon as you move a wheel.
Unlocking the dial is pulling the sliding dog out of the fixed dog. I can be impossible to do if it’s all in a bind.
If you can roll forward straight and level, often they’ll be ok. I think with a locker (or open) it may be a non issue, but with a spool there’s just no slack and it’s an issue.

I actually drilled/threaded/welded a SS bolt into my caps so I could use an Allen wrench to assist. I couldn’t put channel locks on my brand new dials… It definitely helped but if they are really bound up, nothing will work.
YMMV…

Up side, I’ve never heard or seen a broken one so they are tough as nails…

Thanks for the head's up....much appreciated.

I personally know of Detroit’s and grizzly’s breaking when a shaft let go on a 14b, d44, ford 8.8 and d60. I was there for all of them but luckily not on my rig.

The only Detroit I have seen hold up is the one I have from a 1950s Eaton HO72 factory installed “Detroit no spin.” I guess they cared about quality back then. 3 broken shafts, locker still works perfectly and even inspected it with no broken teeth or anything.

Edit: I’ve seen a broken lunchbox in 2 D30s back in the day, lunchbox in my friends d60 has survived 2 broken shafts. 3rd broken shaft broke the factory cross pin but locker still worked

Good info. Thanks for sharing. I've only personally run 1 lunchbox locker and it failed in short order, but it was a LockRight in an IFS 7.5" Toyota front end. I replaced the carrier and AFAIK, it's still going in a friend's truck.

I think I'm going to give it a go at this point.....Spartan and a new Spicer 4.56 and up carrier. I'm also going with hubs (got a screaming deal for manual Nitros from a link @Agitated Pancake) instead of drive slugs. I'm planning to carry one slug/cap as a spare JIC. If the Nitros blow up, I will pony up for the Yukon Hardcore hubs next.

Mainly I just wanna see how robust a lunchbox will be since I have a Zip and a Grizzly for D60s laying around slated for other projects. Dealing with not being able to unlock the hubs with a spool seems like a headache (I've witnessed something similar with a friend who welded his spiders on a D44 in a Jeep with hubs and in Moab, he was fighting to lock/unlock them since it's almost like driving on pavement up there), but I'm planning spools in the fronts of both portal cars we're building (ARBs in the rear) so obviously, I'm not against the idea, just not in this build.

Spectacular low speed stock 30 spline 60 outer shaft shatter with a Grizzly. Locker was just fine.

Running 60's F-R, Rear spool, front grizzly with 42" tsl's NP203 t-case, steers great when not locked, no pushing the front end around. just have to remember to lock before heading down big hills so the rears don't skid and turn the fronts faster.

Thanks for sharing that experience.

I'm confused by this part of your last sentence though....

"remember to lock"??

LOL, thanks for :stirthepot:

I considered a full spool, but wasn't sure how much wear I'd put on the front tires on pavement (what little it will see admittedly) since I thought about it with drive flanges. Hadn't considered hubs..... Hmmm.....

EDIT Damn, Yukon is proud of those hubs....$655 is MSRP for a KP D60.
WOW didnt realize they had went up that much. Cant blame you for not doing it due to the cost.

Well, that's MSRP too...Best price I saw was around $446 IIRC. Still expensive but I'll go that route if the $115 Nitro hubs I just bought instead shit the bed. I already have drive slugs so I can swap one in to get me off the trail if a Nitro fails.
