Beekeepers

And another swarm. And looks like they are killing a queen in the grass.

Picked up 4... er... 3.5 NUC's today. Ordered 2, but the supplier forgot about me. So he gave me 3 for 2. Gave me a 4th with no queen but two queen cells. So we'll see how we do.

PSA... probably not the best idea to pick up NUC's wearing flip flops... right on the big toe.

Put the NUCS into their boxes today. One of the hives is aggressive AF. I swear they had drones just waiting for me to take the suit off…. Got it 4 times. Twice in the face… and two in the hand. right hand is yuge…

How are you guys treating/testing for mites?

Guy I got my NUCS from sold 500 this year… he’s a master (?) beekeeper.

He said mites are inevitable and the best defense is a healthy hive.

Having said that, I treated this year before I got NUCS. And I put the frames I wanted to reuse in the freezer for just shy of a week. Supposedly, that helps eliminate pests that’s may be on the frames

Picked up Nucs Saturday night and helped some friends start their beekeeping journey yesterday. We added two nucs and split two, so we're back to 6 after a rough winter. We lost 4 hives this winter, they did something odd in a warm spell in February and started laying eggs. All 4 that perished had brood, and shouldn't have.

It never hurts to treat a swarm when you catch them. Or a Nuc when you get it.

I've seen videos where a beekeeper was using tea tree oil in an old school fogger. The ones you used for fruit trees.

Wax moths are bad this year. I have some in a swarm trap already. I had a swarm move in a set of old deeps that got destroyed by wax moths.
