What's new

Beekeepers

Ok so checked mousture content on the honey I spun. 82% Brix level or like 16.5% moisture. so tests awesome, I think.:lmao:
Anyways thats my honey for the year. About 2.5 gallons. Hopefully next year both hives start out strong. Then I am splitting at least 1 for sure as I want to produce some good honey for next fall harvest. But who knows I might try and have 6 hives for the spring after next. If I have 6 hives I can have plenty of honey to sell locally.

Pulled 6 frame today.
Going to pull another 6 from another hive next week.
The other 4 hives will not touch this year so they have plenty of food for the winter.

We wanted to, but the bears kind of ruined it. We'd have to run electric to it for a fence. Just wasn't worth the effort.
Where are you and what kind of bears you got? I've been wanting to start some hives but am concerned about black bears. We have a juvenile one that weve been seeing on our property recently.

Solar electric fence controller work great for keeping the bears out.
Have one around the 3 hives I have at my friends farm in pa.
Tons of bears there.
See paw prints in mud around hives.
Never go past the fence wire.

That answers my question, thank you. We got the same kinda bears so it'll take the same kind of deterrence.

From what I remember

Sell honey
Sell queens(they double every year)
Sell hives
Sell pollination services to farmers

I feel like there was more that I'm forgetting
There is a huge demand for small “local”” Honey. If I could get 10-20 gallons a year I would surely let my kids sell the hell out of it. People have been asking for more since I let them sell a few small jars at the kids farmers market.

My profit so far this year is -1200$
Bee shit is expensive. 7 hives.
Building my own boxes now.
Have enough frames now .
I will break even this year, when I bottle and sell everything.
Next year should be more profitable.
I want to be at a total of 10 to 12 hives at my property.

Checked my hives yesterday and dang the hive beetles are bad this year! The hives seem to be strong enough to keep them at bay but I put extra swiffer sheets to help knock them down. Will pull another 4 or 5 gallons of honey in late september the way things are looking.

That is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Some "green" reporter would love to do a story on that.
Yup. Odds are they did not follow the spraying directions on what time of day etc. I personally wont register my hives for my tinfoil hat reasons. But if your state has a huve registration option I believe it gives you recourse if they spray and dont tell you beforehand so you can close up your hives to take necessary precautions.

Well I got my fall mite treatment done barely but its done. Next nice weather period I am going to throw some Oxalic Acid strips on for the winter. Then just feeding them for the winter. 2:1 is still okay but temps are getting down to sugar brick time. My NUC I started in spring is strong but I will feed it all winter regardless. My late season split is strong for a single deep but I will definitely need to feed it over winter. So I am going to feed both. Making a 3” feeding shim with a vert hole. Also this year I am putting an inch of foam under the inner cover and then 2 inches on top. Hope this helps them keep a bit warmer and be able to break cluster to feed easier. Still need to install my mouse guards and put up a hot wire. We had a mischievous bear come through the other day and fuck with our garbage so a hot wire it is. That and weld together a bear resistant garbage enclosure. :mad3: Never bored living in the woods.
