Arborvitae and Spite

Dumb ass thought:

Can you build an 8' "wall", instead of a "fence"?
Not dumb ass for every mexican brick mason around that I know builds a fortress around their properties. It's only if the wall is holding back dirt above 3' is when you have to get it engineered blah blah blah...

And some of the walls I see are hysterical for brick is like tile in which they change every so often in color. You can't produce the same brick over a 5 year span. Probably like a year or less. I don't know my brick but I do know they change. You can see when a mexican get's his brick left over from a job or over a span to complete the wall.

Fence. I’ve planted those trees twice. They don’t survive here for some reason.

Fences don’t need trimming and don’t die and still be able to open the car door.

How much rain/snow do you get?

These things live in swamps in da YewPee.

Fence doesnt get the height though. Seems to be in the midwest you cant really kill an arborvitae

Around here, the past 5-6 years, well established mature arbs have been dying. There can be a row of 10 or 15 and 1 will die or 2 or 3 will.

Really not sure what's going on.

50” of rain, and snow 4” per snowfall maybe 3 to 10 times in the winter, and we keep our lawn green.

We have cedars and pines, they just don’t do well here.

Well, I just got off the phone with the city code fella. They want 4' from the property line so I can maintain them with out being on my neighbors property and they dont grow on to hers. Looks like the fence all while short, is still better than nothing.

6' fence everywhere but right in front of her windows, then do the trees. Less maintenance but the height you need to block most of her views from inside.

How fast are yours growing? I'm wanting to plant a few in the thin spots between me andy neighbor that lives about a quarter mile away. It's the only house I can see from mine and I can only see it in the winter and I don't even want to see it then. Nothing against my neighbors, they're good folks. I just don't want to see another house from mine. The second closest neighbor is a half a mile away.
I planted them in 2017 I think or 2018. I do have deer and they can be a little hard scraping on them.

When I planted they are 1ft tall. I planted 4ft apart. 2 of them are up around 15ft tall. The shortest ones are at like 4ft tall. But they are shaded so kind of expected that.

I need to take a picture. I can't remember what zone I am in, but I am sure farther south they would grow faster.

Bought them specifically for the only neighbor that can see my house. He is awesome, his wife, not so much.
After I planted them I added 2 rows of Norway spruces. The spruces are 5 years now and they are out pacing the Thula giants every year.

But a spruce is very wide at the base, not good for the OP application.

I second the set you poles so they are 8’ off the ground. Build a “Raised bed flower bed with pavers 2’ tall build your 6’ fence up from that

not sure what you local laws are like but around me the fence has to be 1ft from the property line, so in the case of a fence you would be giving your neighbor a ft of property.

You called and asked for permission? :rainbow:
You've never received a code fine with "X" amount of days to correct it before?:shaking:

I ask EVERYTHING now before putting in the effort if I'm unsure. Free advise from the one who enforces the codes just doesn't sound too :rainbow: to me. What if he planted 2' and then had to move them? Besides, they get paid by your property taxes to sit around and answer your questions.

I work for Engineers where we can't afford client mistakes so we might see things a bit differently.

No...I follow in my dad's footsteps.

My current shop never received an occupancy permit.

My property is not zoned for my business.

I built a deck without a permit.

I had my basement remodeled without a permit.

Apparently my township has a 20 or 25' height limit? My salt bin is 33' tall. I found this out when some horse therapy place was requesting a variance for putting up a hoop house (like my salt bin) that was going to be over the height limit.

Built a structure over my bulk fuel tanks.

Asked the fire marshal about regulations for my fuel tanks...I was on the FD at the time and I approved them. lol

I may or may not have replaced my drain field without a permit from the health dept.

You evidently don't have a bitchy neighbor 3' away either.

We ALL have skeletons in the closet... But it's when you either sell or die and someone inherits all your fukd up mess is when it turns to shit.

Nearest neighbor is 600' away. (too close) But they are cool. We watch their house, they watch ours. They've let our dogs out, we let theirs out before it died. She threw a big party during Covid and asked if we cared. Pffft only that we weren't invited. lol It was a birthday party, so it would have been awkard.

I may look into those spruces then. Mine will just be a long the edge of the woods along my pasture

They play the "enough room to maintain it" game here, they will not put a number on it either. My current fence is 6" off the line. Building inspector has been here several times through out the construction of my 30x40 shop and has never once questioned it. As far as im concerned i can stain/seal it from my side with a fucking roller and not be on her property so...

I did verify with the city engineer that i didnt need to pull another permit to add on to my existing fence, he did say to call and have it inspected.
Next phone call was to said inspector who told me to just put it up, but whatever i do call Julie.

Not sure where you are at but look for state programs.

Here in Iowa we have a state program that uses prisoners to harvest trees.

I ordered 75 saplings (12-18" tall) for like $25.

I received 85 trees. quite a few less than 12" tall.

Had to water some the first year but every tree survived. Never expected that and so I had planted many too close together and am having to decide on which ones to cut now or pay someone to come move.

Great program but you have to order months ahead because they sell out and when they call you need to go pick them up right now and plant them right now.
Be ready to jump basically.

I would not plant only Arbors. If one gets sick, you could lose them all. Its better to mix/match different varieties. Throw some Leland Cyprus in there too. They grow FAST!

CSU Forestry Extension used to have a program. Was more than 20 years ago we looked into it.

My neighbor has... Had, an entire row next to my fence. 3/4 of them have blown over in the last 2 years. He just finished cutting down the ones that haven't fallen over. Took 16 down iirc

But I'm watching this thread, the neighbor on the other side of me now is playing green acres, and looks to possibly have the start of a chicken coop going up... I'm not impressed.

Is 6' the total limit, or limit for opaque fencing? In some places (like my county) you can do 6' nominal fence, then 2' of lattice panels on top. They make double layered lattice panels that you can't really see through too. If you have a 2x6 pressure treated under your 6' fence you are looking at roughly 8'6" of fencing.

Good to know many of yall had luck with Leland and thuja green giants. I’ve planted a handful on the fence line and they’ve all died. I’m at the point I wonder if a soil analysis is worth doing just to see where and what it is/needs. I still want something there

C.
No fence shall exceed six feet and four inches in height on residential lot side or rear yard.

E.
All fences shall be located within the lot's property lines. Fences that face adjoining private property shall be set back a sufficient distance from the property to allow the owner to maintain the exterior side of the fence.

That last one gets me, So who decides how much room it takes to maintain? I can stain/seal it with a roller from my side with out being on her property. Talking to a friend up near the city they put them on the line and its cool so

I've heard a few times that Chain link fencing with "hedge link" slats is the best fence bang for the buck for fencing for long term. But I'm not made of that $ to know...

Depending on location, And how old you are or plan to live there. My stained wood fence lasted about 15 years now and it needs replaced fairly soon if not yesterday.

And Leland cypress grows out of hand in about the 6th or 8th year. And it burns like crazy! I had to cut a row down once.

I was also given the best advise from a kid waiting in line in front of me when I too took a baggie of soil sample into my local college. I mentioned that I had one, then another, then another die. He looked me in the eye and said "then why don't you just plant something else".:homer: I've never felt so stupid to have dug a baggie of dirt to have driven to be waiting in a line in my life as I patted him on the back and left.

That's when I pulled an extra Leland up in both directions from the ones that died and planted "Wax Leaf Ligustrum" in that area. Wished I'd planted that from the start.

Soule88, I think the distance from the line is relative to how comfortable you are with the neighbor, how much cheap vodka you buy and how much future shit you are ready to take from your neighbor or future neighbors. My neighbor was close to just being asked for a gun dual to get the misery over with so mine went like 1" off the line if that and she couldn't say nothing.

I lucked out and now have cool neighbors. 8"-12" sounds ideal to me.
