Recently acquired a shitbox 1988 F-350 with a spray rig on the back. The pickup is set up with a pto to hydraulic pump and then that runs a hydraulic motor that runs a centrifugal pump. Seems kinda overly complicated, but with the amounts of fluid they were pumping through the booms and speeds they were spraying at it was probably necessary. I will only be spraying pipelines, ditches and around buildings/whatnot, so I removed the booms and will not need that high of a volume of fluid pumped. Having set up a skid sprayer before I am wanting to run a diaphragm pump on it for simplicity and ruggedness. I was originally going to adapt the hydraulic motor to run the diaphragm pump, but after a moment of clarity the other day I realized that every time I clutch the pickup the pump would stop making pressure, which would suck when spaying in tight spots and corners.
So now I think the easiest option to power the pump would be just to couple it to a small diesel engine. I'd like to go with a diesel because the pickup itself is a diesel and has a large auxiliary tank fitted to the spray body. I believe I can tap into this with the small diesel and run everything off of one tank and not have to re-fuel the small engine fuel tank ever (probably remove it even.) Then I can remove the pto pump and all the hydraulic system and re-purpose them for some other project.
Anyone have one of those cheap single cylinder diesel engines? What brand did you get and would you recommend it? The two I listed don't have an electric start, but I'm thinking that would be a nice option and I could rig up some switches to start it from the cab....
