What's new

Anyone handy near Austin, TX want to make some money?

Getting Plym to pick it up with a Uhaul is the least shitty option that's been floated so far.

Call a bunch of HVAC places and ask if they wanna make a quick buck. 1000lb and breaks if you tip it over is no different than industrial HVAC equipment they frequently deal with.

I agree with everyone else saying an engine hoist or jack + blocks + dollys is more than sufficient for a 1000lb object.

look for rigging companies, not moving companies. there’s also a lot that just call themselves machine tool movers. I know a few in houston, but i don’t deal with any in austin. Certainly more expensive than egyptian slaves, but you don’t have to worry as much about the locusts.

On another note, have you considered just getting someone to disassemble it? A lot of lathes like that will break down, they were mailed in pieces from Montgomery ward or such to begin with. they’ll come apart into 3 or 4 pieces that one guy could manhandle around.

:shaking:

It's a 1k lathe, not a 40k horizontal boring mill.

If he hated money he wouldn't be buying on GovPlanet so that pretty much rules out specialty machinery movers and rigging companies right off the bad.

I would just engine hoist that thing into a pickup. If it's got a hollow spindle that would make it a piece of cake.

i didnt read all the thread, but that about an hour and 20 from me. If i were to go get it, id take my gooseneck and my skid steer, snatch strap that bastard off the dock and place on the trailer.

OR.... id take a pallet i have sitting, lift it onto the pallet, afix to pallet somehow, then use the skid steer forks onto the trailer.

so it has to be picked up only on wednesday? it cant be picked up prior to wednesday?

also, need a real, actual address or GPS coordinate before i commit to taking a 27' gooseneck trailer into the butthole of the City of Austin.

If you have to ask you're incapable of doing it right.

the man offers to help and has the the equipment and you go all arrogant on him?
Generally you want to keep the lathe upright. It's a bit of an oddball...Maybe you could gently lay it over on a truck tire, maybe...Yes it looks unstable on 3 legs

If its on a dock 2 guys and some planks should get that in the rear of a pickup.
Its Texas, isn't there oil everywhere? Doesn't every other person have one of these?

Apparently you aren't dealing with the same rigging companies I do. They can do the monster stuff too, or just send out one guy in a pickup with some jacks and dollies and such to simply jack it up and palletize or crate it, etc.

i ask because i can damn sure get it nailed to a pallet and wrapped correctly. but after that it goes to some 300# gorilla who doesnt give a shit. if i can lay it down from the get go, then it may get to mormantown better. if it has to be stood up the whole way, fine, i can make it happen but after i drop it off, its someone elses problem.

If you do this (thank you for offering as it is less sketchy than the approach I suggested) and if you like I will meet you for moral support. If Artifuckt shows up with a camera I will shove it so far up his ass that he will have footage of his molars.

Well fuck , Arti has to go now. :lmao:

Film or it didn't happen :flipoff2:

Arti might be bad to have around. Isn’t he like 6’7” and almost three hundred?.....

I can't tell if some people are really scared of being around me or not.. maybe they are afraid I might flip out and beat them with my tripod..??

but yes, I'm 6'7"275.. but I'm outa shape, as happens to most guys in their late 40s.. lol

oh and I have worked in shipping with uhh (edit ?6?) companies.. I have years of experience.. I would have thoughts.. but I don't really wanna let stuff slide, if ya'll want my opinion, whether it looks secure or not..

we still have not seen an accurate picture.. cuz he said 60L inches.. and the pic doesnt match up.. hmm I'm getting a serious DeJaVu'

The closest dimensions I can find online are about 65" long by 42" wide and 48" tall. I just gave it a little width to fit a standard pallet.

Are you guys thinking I'm guessing too big or too small? It's essentially an industrial pipe threader made for production type work. The bed ways are short, as it just threads short pieces at a time. I've never even seen one of these machines in person so those dimensions are my best guess and I've been able to find comparable dimensions to comparable models online. I bet I'm within 4-6" any direction. The weight is confirmed at 1100lbs.

I've tracked down a few rigging companies and I was pleasantly surprised at their rates. the trucking companies on the other hand... I've had quotes from 2200 to 6300 to haul this thing which is waaaaaaaay more than I paid for it:lmao:

I tried throwing out a lowball bid on a forklift in the same general area but it got out of my price range pretty quick and then I realized it's just not practical to taketan entire week off just to go pickup this piece of equipment

sounds way to big for a "normal pallet".. I've seen extra strong pallets that could depending on pressure points (weight distribution)

one problem.. This Texan guy seems to think you have a place to drop it off at, once he puts it on his trailer.. and I don't think that has been figured out.. I dont think he knows you're near Vegas..

also, a few months ago, someone wanted people from this site to join him at some event at hidden falls offroad park, and he said he didnt want me there.. so i never even responded to the thread.. is that how its gonna be again??

edit: anyways at a number of places where i worked on big machines and production lines, for some of my overtime they would let me work in shipping (same pay) ..this happened at a few places, cuz i would mention it, since it was on my resume.. that way, if another shift had a certain kind of problem, I would be on site..

I wont speak to the past events about a wheelin trip, I live near sand hollow, quite a ways away from Tx

I have an LTL carrier sorted out to the best of my ability for now, I can't plug in final dimensions or specify a drop off date because I'm lacking that info but "the ride" to me is more or less sorted.

You're right, it's not so much a "normal" pallet. I assumed someone with the wherewithal to load this thing would recognize the pallet and dimensions. I do come across abnormal pallets fairly regularly that would most likely work without modification but I guess there I go assuming again.

I have contacted about 15 moving companies, truckers, posted on U-ship and its looking like I'm most likely going to end up paying a rigging company to scoop it, crate it and drop it off at a freight terminal.

the seller made it clear that they have no dock, forklift, ramp and will not offer any assistance whatsoever, oh and its wendesday by appointment only. freaking gov employees:girly: And if I had to guess, they're probably not even there all day wednesday anyway. mandated smoke breaks, multicultural training, indigenous bird spotting hours so forth and so on. I realize this is turning into a pain in the ass and it's pretty unreasonable to expect someone to drop everything to handle some goose chase like this. I was hoping for the off chance someone was close, it was super convenient and I would gladly throw some money their way for time and materials. It's really the Wednesday only thing that is incredibly lame and that alone kills it for most, had they disclosed that before I paid for the machine, I probably wouldn't have even started the thread

the LTL people will rally the pallet a lot more but the hot shots, private truckers and the specialty movers are super busy and would most likely end up dead heading to another town to find a load back home and I can appreciate that. I just need a pallet that can handle operation dumbo drop:flipoff2:

just realized I understood the opposite, and I know at least one other person read that wrong too..

In my mind I added a "not"
.. as in my mind I saw Arti might NOT be bad to have around.. but the NOT isnt in the original post or reply to it

just something i noticed

thats why plym## said
Super; then you do it with him.

he certainly had it backwards too
