This.....It doesn't matter.
A turbo needs the above to not blow up.
SC is a bolt on with decent results and run,(no tuning) turbo needs tuning to avoid death from what I've seen.
No first had experience but seen friends do both.

A good ECU would correct thatI don't have any firsthand experience, but I have heard many people say the SC's don't work very well at higher altitudes (I'm at 6500, frequent 10-13K). Is there any truth to this? (I am mostly basing my info off my BIL's '00 DC with the SC. He had issues with pinging and it not running correct when he took it to higher elevations.)
Actually... you'll probably be better at high altitude because it may not run as lean off the bat.I don't have any firsthand experience, but I have heard many people say the SC's don't work very well at higher altitudes (I'm at 6500, frequent 10-13K). Disagree completely. They are extremely overpriced for the gains you get. New is $4k now, and Toyota fan boi's will over pay for used ones.
Yes they are easy and bolt on, but a decent turbo with the same boost will work much better for less than half the price.
Meth solves thisUh... no.
Having said that, the big issue with the S/C is there is no intercooling...
You guys realize the engine doesn't care of its 5lbs of boost from an SC or 5lbs from a turbo?
Sure, you'd have to tune the wastegate to 5lbs.
Lots of people say the "bolt on and forget it" superchargers run very lean. So if you want it right, they bother need tuning.
But yes, I get the supercharger is "easy" but for $4k it's not that impressive imo.
Uh no what?Uh... no.
Having said that, the big issue with the S/C is there is no intercooling...
And YOU realize that your "turbo is better" and "less than 1/2 the cost" is incorrect..
I have had a supercharged 3.4 for 13+ years. It's running a split-second piggy back and 7th injector. It's hard to tune. A stand alone would be much better, no doubt about it.
But to say a turbo is cheaper doesn't make sense.
EDIT: have you driven a S/C truck? Just curious.
YotaAtieToo : I promise that adding boost properly is more expensive than you think
I could do a turbo for $500 if I wanted to. Even the full kit is $2500, so $1500 less than the SC?
No, I have multiple buddies with them and have ridden in thier trucks. My one buddy got his for $600 and then spent another few hundred on the nicknack parts. For that price, I'd do it also. For $4k, nah
I could do a turbo for $500 if I wanted to.
And my point is that you're wrong. My point is that there is ways to do a budget turbo, where there really isn't for the SC.
why don't you allow the s/c to have the same supporting mods in your example, though? No kidding, but you can compare bolting on a supercharger and ignoring the fact it runs hot and lean to adding a turbo, full fuel system, exhaust, tune, ect.

There is no way to do either a S/C or Turbo for cheap.

I'd definitely love to have a turbo 3.4 in my DD... absolutely!
OK, I guess you better tell all the thousands of people out there building their own turbo kit with used turbos?
Buddy had a 350hp mr2 in high-school all with garage built shit, besides maybe a piggy back. Ran for years like that.
That was my point. Other guys were saying you need a ton of supporting mods. But so would the SC? So if you're just talking apples to apples, turbo is way cheaper. Even just the kit. Is $2500 vs $3800-4k
And that kit has the Intercooler essentially below the front bumper...
I have a 2UZ 1st gen 4Runner and a 3UZ powered buggy. They are wide, but nothing sounds as cool.At least this is telling me that there isn’t really a must have engine swap. I’m actually liking the rebuilt 3.4 turbo. It sounds like the cheapest, and probably easiest option.
The 2uz peaked my interest, but finding one for a decent price may prove challenging.
