What's new

2024 Wildfire season. :(

I have marked 20 trees to come down this winter as well.

dont want to do it now as
A a big pile of slash gets me nervous during fire season
B it attracts bark beetles this time of year and then they go after the heathy trees as well.

I have another 20 dead trees I cut down a couple years ago I need to get rid of (branches are already burned)
I also pulled out about 100 bushes. Manzanita and whitethorn. will double that by mid winter.

then another ten trees limbed to the 30 foot line.
I cut down another 10 after I posted earlier. 20 today.

Now I'm in slash hell.

Planning to use my rig with winches front/rear and the hoe to move it all to another part of the property where it can be burned...

Manzanita
Last summer, for the first time I got to see Manzanita burn. Buddy brought a bunch to camp for the fire.
Holy smokes, that stuff burns so hot you would think he soaked it in gas. Never seen any wood burn so hot as that.
Not sure how dry it needs to be to burn, but I'm certain a wildfire moving through will dry and ignite it without issue and that stuff will do it's part to make a bad situation much worse.

Good move on getting it out.

Saw this on the other side of Tahoe, was just a thin line of smoke when we arrived, took this pic like 30 minutes later

Looks like you're at the Grove restaurant.
Camping there or hotel? Hope you had a good time and good weather.

Is that ovee towards emerald bay?
Yota nailed it, was at the beach by the Grove. So, looking over to the Nevada side.

Went to Emerald Bay for the day, stopped at the Grove there just for few minutes. Lived in Sac for 20 years, haven’t ever really been “to” the actual lake, usually in town or passing through.

Magical place.

The Davis Fire sadly looks like it's about to pummel the Galena area.

I've got to run to Lovelock tomorrow and will stay in Reno. That's a big red flag area there right now.

Our valley is completely socked in with wild fire smoke. Closest fire I know of is ~60 miles away. Most coming up from a fire down by West Yellowstone I believe.
Coming into work I couldn’t see the Bridgers until the sun was almost completely up, backlighting them.

Looks like the Airport fire went from 0-8500 acres in less than 24 hours?

Are these being started intentionally or ??

The 4wd crowd tends to stray off the main road up there a bit so they had a work crew moving some boulders to block access to the unauthorized routes. They started the fire doing that work, or at least that is what is being reported.

And they couldn't put it out right then and there?

Interestingly, yesterday I got a letter from Georgetown Resource Conservation District about the US Forest Service giving funding for removing vegetation fuel. A little late for helping Caldor fire this year and Mosquito Fire two years ago. But it does make things feel a little warmer/fuzzier going forward knowing nearby areas will be hardened.

ugh. :(

NV Energy shuts power down anywhere near a fire now.
I went back past there about 30 minutes later and it looked like it was stopped by I80 and just about out on its own. Then about 30 minutes later, it looked big again, like maybe it had started on the south side of 80. Don’t know.

First pic is when I drove back by it. Second pic is when I looked back from Derby Field.

Davis fire a little bit ago viewed from Reno.

Watch Duty isn’t mentioning much about houses lost today, but the last pic sure makes it look like many are severely threatened.
