Looking at possibly getting a 2016 f550 4x4 and would want to use the axles in a dentside for project BUY they're factory 10 lug and I'd want to go to 8 lug for normal wheel and tire choices. Or would I be better off selling the axles and buying f350 axles. Axle strength isn't my concern since it's a street truck.

Fairly sure you can use the same Era F250/350 unit bearings. But you end up with something like 77" wms.

Check the 05+ thread for more accurate info :flipoff2:

I have twoof these axles, it isnt 2016 but its 05+ as far as I can see, all you do is unbolt the 10 lug unit bearing, slap in an 8 lug unit bearing but then your on your own when it comes to brakes

Can use the matching 8 lug brakes too.

It's just a SD60 without the 10 lug unit bearings and adapters.

Caliper brackets swap over so you can run the smaller 8 lug rotors?

I thought the way to do it involved the F550 caliper and 99-04 F450 rotors, but you were stuck with 20"+ wheels?

The F250/350 changed to larger brakes in 2013, they just drop on with his calipers.

If not, making an abutment bracket's not hard.

This is a 2014 SD60 from an F450, with all F350 8 lug stuff from the same year. I kept the F450 calipers.

Fits under an 18" wheel.

His brake tech comes in on post 6

The giant C’s and knuckles along with bigger tubes and bigger greasable ball joints for longer service life make the 550 worth it over a 250 with ball joint eliminators.
There is also more tube for links without cutting the pumpkin on the driver side. At full lock 45° my tires rub the lower link, that is with a wider axle, a narrow axle would limit steering angle and or rub more.
Bearing swap from 10 to 8 is easy. Same unit bearing size.
Brakes are the hard part.
I would still ditch the massive rotors and calipers and drop down to the F250 rear calipers and rotors and make the brackets. Lighter weight, smaller wheels with more backspacing, balanced braking load at all corners in 4x4 with locked drivetrain.
The 550 brakes at stupid heavy :homer:

Unless you feel like sending me a pair that do what these do, in all the same holes, etc.

Don't care. - not the focus of the truck, or this thread, even.

You can't even see it at 3' away. :flipoff2:

im short and based on the pictures its eye level :flipoff2:
Feel free to make and install a set that does what these do... I'll let you. :flipoff2:

Otherwise, they stay, they work and were made out of shit in my shop corner.
