My new neighbor (I'm new to the neighborhood, not him) has an old Ford that he thinks lost the front seal in the transmission. It's a 1992 F-150 4X4 Regular Cab, 5.0l engine and auto trans. It runs fine but won't move and the 4 wheel drive has never worked since he got it 10 years ago. He told me that he was going to scrap it the other day. I told him to let me know because I would pay him scrap value for it. It's straight and fairly rust free, except for the muffler which has rotted through in a few spots. Today he came over and told me the local salvage yard would pick it up and give him $300 for it. I told him that it might be worth more than that even though it needs work in order to drive it. I don't know a lot about the value of these old Fords, but old vehicles seem to be getting more valuable every day. He said he doesn't want to mess with it and said he would be happy if I gave him $300.

What's something like this worth if it's running and driving in your area? Is it even worth messing around with?

I mean, the universe has cued you up to offer him three fifty and get the thing. Running, driving, around here a truck like that is worth $2500 to $5000. A trans is going to be $2500 if you go the cheapest possible route. So those things are getting junked all the time

I appreciate the value range. It seems to square with what other folks on here are indicating as well.

Why do you say a trans is going to be $2,500? Is there something I'm not thinking about? I'll be doing all of the work myself. If it really just needs a front seal, that should be fairly cheap. Beyond that I'll probably put a junkyard transmission in it. I'm currently looking at local junkyard websites, but if I can find one at the local pick and pull it will only be $220 (plus the risk of redoing the labor if it's no good).

I say that and that it depends. Even if the seal is a gusher. I would pour it over full of trans fluid and drive it before I just assumed based on his word that you could just put a pump seal in and save it. If he ever ran it low enough on fluid that the engine wouldn’t move the truck in gear he did irreparable damage to it.

If that truck is everything it looks to be it’s probably a 4R70W transmission and those are feeble weak transmissions to begin with. Tons of light duty OBS trucks get junked out because a reman transmission costs more than the truck is worth.

Are you a 4r70W or E4OD guru and I don’t know it? And monster has a TERRIBLE reputation FYI. Google their reviews before giving them a penny.

No I'm not an expert at all. edit: I think it has the E4OD because it has the overdrive on/off button on the gear shifter IIRC.

No not at all, I assumed it had the AOD transmission, but I'm actually clueless. I'll need to do some research.
The 4R70W is just the lockup torque converter pickup version of an AOD. Which isn’t a good thing. AOD’s are car transmissions and weren’t really up to that task either.

The one I'm looking at is a 1992, so it is probably the E4OD.

this will help

I like the looks of those trucks more than the actual truck itself...

But that's clean enough to put 3-5k into and have something kinda cool

The 5.0 f150 99% won't have an e4od
5.8 probably would

I'd put a new front seal in it, 2.5" lift, some 285/70 17s and get it buffed and waxed, it will look better and get way more attention than it deserves:laughing:

Any running and driving 4x4 that's not totally rotten has a floor price of $2500 these days.
Do not pay more . It’s not worth $2500 to anyone in its current condition and even if the front seal is replaced the 4wd has an unknown condition preventing its usage . Fixed with exhaust in tact , transmission replaced or not leaking and the 4wd repaired it would bring $2500.

However , the labor you would pay with today’s shop rates and parts prices would easily exceed the trucks value . 100-150 an hour labor . 6-8 hours flat rate to R and R transmission , let’s say 1k for bench rebuild if you’re lucky , 2 hours for the exhaust repair , 100 for a muffler and you spend another $500 in parts for the 4wd to work you’re in it for $2900 after the $300 you paid and now you overpaid ….. projects almost never end up saving you money in case nobody here has figured it out 😜

Good luck !

Well, shit, what are we all here for then?

I'm goin' to sell my Jeep and get the fuck out of this money pit of a hobby.

Can't believe after all this time, I'm just now finding out that I won't be making money when I sell this old piece of shit.
