Someone asked me to make a thread, so here it is. Did not think it was worthy of a thread, but we have some 2wd street trucks in here so what the hell. :flipoff2:

1984 F250 I picked up. It was a 6.9 2wd truck that had thrown a rod back in the late 80's and sat in the desert since. Bed looks like it was never used and it has one small dent in the front fender and damage where someone keyed the door. Goal is a tow rig to camp out of and haul my Scout to go wheeling and sleep in the bed, and also a backup daily driver. (Scout build thread)

I also picked up this 1992 F350 from a member who likes to play with shafts all day. For a number of reasons, it was destined to become a parts truck due to California being ******ed. I flew up and drove it home 700 miles. Later found a broken engine and transmission mount, and the truck was filled with rat ****. I parted it out, the bed is now on my friend's cattle ranch and Idaho and the 460, ZF5, and 4wd stuff is going into the F250. Been selling off parts to fund the build.

Tore down the F350, engine came out for a rebuild. It ran good and did not really need one, but one of the casting ears broke off and I had to weld it back, also tossing in a Melling MTF3 stage 1 cam and going to through on some headers if budget allows. Planning on using stock EFI (have heard it does well with mild cams) but might toss on a carb with a price adapter if it goes south.

Engine tear down.

Casting welded up with nickel rod. Worked amazingly well. Got it as flat as I could, still can see light between the transmission and it but a .008" shock shim does not fit in.

Pulled cam bearings tonight. Looking at the journals they are gouged pretty much all the same, in the same spot on all of them. I used a cam bearing tool and am confused on where I messed them up. Since they are all consistent I think I ****ed them up with the cam bearing tool.

So, are you going to put the 84 body on the 93 frame, or swap drivetrain over? How similar are 84/93 chassis/body?
Debating, the 84 chassis is in better shape and near as I can tell rear spring hangers are the same, just needs some minor fab work to put in the front springs. The body mounts are in the same spot, only difference between the chassis is the front frame horns.

Cast welding repair, I’m in! And for sunny California pictures

How did that break happen?
Looks like something got caught between the transmission and engine when someone put it in and just sinched it down. Judging by rust it had been cracked for a long time. Was an old farm truck with lots of fun fixes through out.

Bummed you went 460 instead of keeping it an IDI. I miss my old 6.9L truck.
The engine had thrown a rod and someone had pulled the valve covers, oil pan, and intake before it sat. Engine was completely locked up, rusted, and packed full of dirt. Thought about tracking one down but they seem to go for $500-1000 around here and I would have wanted a turbo. The 460 will do what I need.

This would be the far easier option. There aren't any differences in mount locations from 80-96 if you keep the same cab/bed configuration.
Swapping bullnose core supports/grilles/fenders onto newer trucks is quite common.

Frames are nearly indentical. Frame horns and front suspension is different, and the 4WD frame has a billion more holes drilled in it for no reason.

The 2WD frame is in much better shape, with much fewer miles. (4wd frame has had a lot of **** welded to it and cut off over the years it seems, and is more rusty). Rear hangers are as easy as cutting the ones of the 4WD frame and moving over. Front hangers are easy to fabircate. Rear suspension just bolts in. Engine mount holes are already there, and I think I need to drill new holes for the trans crossmember.

Either way the frame is getting stripped, cleaned, and painted.

Digging this!
Look forward to the build
How did ear break?
I dropped my spare 460 bare block and broke one ear off similar. Dumb ass being in a hurry using ratchet strap to move it when moving.

No clue, was like that when I pulled it out. It was well rusted so likely had been cracked for a while.

No pics but finished cleaning more parts and got the cam bearings in. Bottom end goes together next week.

What did you use to clean the block and gasket surfaces? looking good.
I washed the whole thing with purple simple green and an oven brush, the rust all got wire wheeled and the gasket sufaces and inside got acetone and paper towls. Most of my time into this thing has been cleaning. Also blew out everything I could with compressed air, there was a lot of sludge in the old galleys.

Might have to do a cooling flush after I get the cam broke in, no matter how much time I spent I could not get all the chunks of rust out of the water jackets and cooling passages.

Thanks, kind of my plan for my 400.

Engine rebuilds, the majority of the damn work is cleaning.

Been busy lately, life has only given me 30 minutes after work and no weekends to work on this. New job lets me work as much overtime as I want, taking advantage of that.

Got 6 pistons in. ****ed up a bearing so waiting on the replacement to come in. Put the bearing cap on backwards on the rod and it gouged itself on the oil hole on the crank :homer:.

Just plucking away at it. My goal was to drive this thing by end of summer, we will see how that works out. Going to yank the body off the frane and get the frame in the garage to fab the spring hangers once the engine is done.
