Skully's ****box

Clicky starter fixed with the ice cube relay trick hopefully. Also broke another set of ****in magnetic tow lights
If it’s a standard 5 post relay I’ve had good luck using some eBay sourced higher amp relays that had heat management issues or even running a second relay in parallel to suck up some of the load.

was crawling around under the rig today and noticed a nice thick pool of gear oil on the topside of the belly skid plate. not sure where the tcase is leaking from but it is leaking BADLY :shaking:

one more thing to take apart and deal with.

So I pulled the transfer case tonight expecting to rip it apart and replace the gaskets or seals and half of the fawkin bolts holding the case halves together were loose. I tightened em all up, cleaned the case and painted it. I hoped the clean painted case might make it easier to spot leaks again

Does anyone else loctite the case halves? I don’t know how to combat the vibration that seems to make a lot of **** on this rig work loose.

Or those fancy toothed lock washers on the tcase?

Do you have a driveshaft that vibrates?

What tcase mount setup do you run?
I’m pretty sure my front driveline vibrates. Not sure why or how.

I have the old RRO tcase mount with stock rubbers. It comes loose too over time.

i am also not sure if the drivelines are phased properly, i think they are but they could be 180* out.

tcase is back in and filled with fluid and its all back together now.

No,
I don’t touch them until I slip another case, or about once a year.
What's your rear driveshaft angle at?
Are the boggers balanced?
Do you have working lockout hubs? If so, your front driveshaft doesn’t spin.

Slip?

Steep

Took the boggers off but the 31’s are not balanced

Yes, but I lock the hubs when I hit dirt and I can tell the front vibrates when I get going. I wonder if I shouldn’t turn the slip yoke 180*

How much spline is showing sitting on level ground? pics?
phasing, take it off lay it on the ground next to something straight, take a pic.

Rear driveline is steep and maybe too much spline showing. Although it’s never pulled apart I do have another spacer I can turn down to 1/2” or so and add on the tcase end.

Or get the tom woods CV rear driveline when I save some more $$ up.

Haven’t had a chance to pull the front apart.

well i have a 1" thick spacer chucked up in my lathe right now, i've never had the driveline pull apart on the trail so i figured turning it down to like 1/2" thickness would give some peace of mind.

one i save some $$ up i think i'll spring for the tom woods CV drivelines and maybe point the pinion up a little more

If you can find a front driveshaft from a 79-83 Toyota, it's a cv and the perfect length with adapters.

Or get an 84-95 (maybe 96+ too?) and have it shortened (86+ will need to be clearance for more angle)

I ran a 4runner front cv, works great, still have it for a spare. Toy ujoint spensive and the ujoint caps will rotate so tac weld trail mart style.
I switched to 1310s when I had my current shaft built, locally.

Yeah I looked on FB and CL for a solid axle shaft but none out there now, I’ll keep my eye out. That crossed my mind with the pentadapters but figured a 79-83 front driveline would be impossible to find

Had some intrusive thoughts this evening. I’ve gotten tired of carrying a fullsize spare and thought the weight would be better used on spare gas and a cooler. I think from now on the spare gets thrown in the tow rig and left at staging/camp. ****in buggies don’t have spares

So I spent the evening cutting the swing out up and have ideas…..

My kids are getting too big for the rear bench and car seats. I’m thinking I’ll convert this to a three seater and mount a single bucket in the back, offset to the pass side and then use the space next to it for a tool box/cooler mount or dog bed

Then either mount my 20mm ammo box that currently holds recovery gear direct to the rear door or keep the swing out arm and weld a hitch-haul type basket to it that I can load up with a gas can, cooler or firewood whatever. Then I could strap the spare tire to it if I really wanted to carry it for some reason.

FWIW currently I carry one soft tool bag under the hood, a canvas bag of small spares behind the rear bench.

or.........mount the spare inside next to the rear passenger, behind the driver?

They didn't drive the rig to the trails.

I like the spare tire/mount on the back. Samurais are tight to begin with. Mount a spare inside and it's stupid.
It will wheel a bit different without the spare though. IDK what kind of trails/camp you run, but for fire roads, I'd keep it.

I'll never run the adapters when 91-95 flanges bolt on. Seen too many of the adapters fail, then you're ****ed trying to fix it with a drill and oversized bolts/taps.

Honestly, cut the slip yoke and lengthen it. Trail tough used to sell them, but its pretty easy to do.
Or try putting the 1" spacer on the transfer case side. IIRC, Thats what I ran on mine for years. 4000 RPM's at 70 MPH.

I never do anymore either. I always flat tow it unless I’m just putzing around town and I have OBA and a plug kit anyway.

Yeah the back end has definitely come up without the weight back there. Maybe a smaller spare like a 235/75 or something, idk.

No wonder Tim Hardy towed a trailer lol

The 91-95 samurai flanges bolt to what year Toyota shafts?

The double spacer idea will do for now
