Build "Tweety" the '45 MB

Done unless it breaks, the SM420 can fend for itself for now. Not bad for some **** that was laying around in the dirt behind the shop.

looks like it'll work! you pushed it all up as far upward as it would go?
It's tight with a little wiggle room for mount movement and the skid flexing up if I end up parked on it, drain plug on the t-case is 3/16-1/4" above the hole in the plate. The drivetrain itself is as high as it can reasonably be, the clutch slave cylinder is right under the floor board. I'd love a flat belly but with a stock frame and this engine/transmission it's tough to get, the frame rails aren't tall enough.

Pulled the front diff apart to find a Lock-rite instead of the limited slip I recalled the old man putting in it. Pretty unimpressed with the way the gears were set up, basically no preload on the carrier bearings and this one fell off on it's own when I dropped the carrier in my drain pan (due to the lack of preload) Both axle seals are ****ed up too. So it's still getting the new carrier, and some more new parts

Started in on the electrical. Waiting on some supplies still but I did get my fuse/relay box in and swapped in an internal reg alternator. Wiring will be bare bones in this. Needs to start, charge, maybe a gas gauge and have enough lights to get out of the woods. I'm also planning on future proofing somewhat just in case I go EFI, I figure I'll use one relay for a fuel pump circuit and pull a wire to the back just in case. Also planning on mounting a starter button to the shifter, I can't reach the key when I'm belted in.

I decided the previous big hole in the firewall was the best place to make a bigger one for the fuse box. There was a stub of 3" ducting there to hook the air cleaner up to in the event they were running in lots of water previously.

Are you happy with the fuse/relay box choice? I have the same/similar one and I partially wired it on a backburner project, but I'm debating if I'll regret it down the road or not versus a more expensive one...

Works fine for me, I do wish I had gotten the unassembled version since I'm only using 3 circuits. I depinned the unused ones but they aren't as sealed as they could be

I think I have the slightly bigger one and it was the unassembled version.

New axle seals and carrier installed. Set up pretty drama free, it's preloaded enough that you gotta tap it into the housing with a dead blow and backlash came in at .007-008". Didn't touch the pinion at all.

Deleted the drain plug someone tapped into the cover, all I could see is bumping it on a rock and pulling the 3 threads right out.

So, haven't done **** to this thing lately but I did need to drag some logs out of the woods and this was the right tool for the job. Brought home some aluminum to make a trans tunnel, still need to go get steel to finish out the floor. Overall it works really well, carb floods pretty bad side hilling, not sure how much can be done with that. Been at least 30 years, probably longer since this thing was on this property dragging firewood.

I can beat my head against a wall quite a bit making a carb work for how much the sniper costs. I know they work well but they're too proud of them for me.
for sure, i had $1200 easy into my sniper swap on my zuk, and had some headaches with it initially but i was sick of ****ing with carbs, especially with how much altitude difference there is between my various wheeling spots.

what carb is on yours again? looks like a some 1bbl carter contraption. i have a couple 1bbl webers off a landrover if you want to try them? use the same jets and **** as 32/36's i think

It's a Holley 1940, I have a couple carter YFs on the shelf i might mess with. I have a motorcraft 2 barrel too that can be modified to run on its head but I haven't come up with an adapter yet.

propane?

Or put a diesel engine in there :flipoff2:
You know propane hadn't even crossed my mind but being that this engine was probably used in more forklifts than it was cars that's not a bad idea. Would have to scrounge up stuff though, kits cost damn near as much as EFI now.

I have an old propane set up off a 1970 International 304 V8. Probably too big but it's yours if you want it. No tank but that would be way too big anyways.
