Skully's ****box

I was watching Downing Fab’s YouTube channel and I kinda want to clone a rig he’s currently working on, spring under yota axles, stealthy 5-6” wheelbase stretch, narrow 35’s.

Currently my gearing is 4.56’s, 6.4’s. I think the yota 5.29’s and 35’s should be a little lower than where I am now. Lower is always better.

My EFI still has some high idling issues….maybe the turbo will make that worse

And I’ll cut some body to get the 35’s on but I’d like to keep it streetable still and retain the top/doors.

It’d also be nice to find a decent clean body donor someday. Tintop would be nice.

After my last trip, I'm wanting some upgrades for mine. I've yet to break anything in the zuk axles, but the steering angle is horrendous and I want sticky 35s.

Spua yotas and 35s would be sweet. My first one was stock spoa and 33-35s. It was definitely a good all around rig. Even the stock birfs were pretty bulletproof under a Sami. The yotas axles are almost meant to go under there.

For sure. I have all these grand ideas to stretch the tub, but still throw on a top. But who knows. Having another tub to use for a stretch would definitely help.

Then you won't want to cut it

Go linked and coil springs on Toyotas.

Here’s one I help build, but it has stock+ 2” wheelbase and 37s to meet stock class rules. It’s not practical for anything other than comps and driven by midgets. When you go spring under, it’s way more stable, but you run into fitment issues with everything.

Come buy mine....
That was fast.

Dumb question but close to firing this thing up with the turbo. Should I ****** the timing a little?

Might see if Fastspec2 has some wisdom.

Nah, if anything put a bit more in it. Will help it idle better until you go closed loop.
One thing I do recomend on cheap chinese turbo's is stall the compressore wheel till the oil drain gets warm. That way you know oil has made it through the turbo, any cosmolene has been washed out of it and good fresh oil has hit the chinese bushings.

In my experience the factory wastegates on the Passat ko3's were all 3PSI springs.

I got it running but I think I got a bad turbo.

Smokes like a bastard, and ran the oil pan almost dry before I got it shutdown.

Tydes told me to put a restrictor on the oil feed line, did that and it still smokes and throws oil out the exhaust.

Do I try buying another turbo off eBay or say **** it and go back to NA. I’m thinking back to NA and save the turbo stuff for another project

This was just like part throttle and it smoked like crazy.

What's your oil drain look like? I would make sure that's functional. It should be like 3x's the size of the feed line and completly unrestricted.

Also, stick with it, I totally get the frustration. But you're close, and it'll be worth it.

Did you happen to order a tdi turbo??? :flipoff2:

Might be a bad seal too, that’s a bit excessive.

im about 99% done swapping it back to NA already

im over it. i want to wheel.

drain as far as i can tell is good. i burned a solid 4qts of oil.

restrictor didnt help unfortunately

i think its a bad seal. oil was dripping out the exhaust and a bunch was pooled in the TBI and intake side too

on a positive note, the boggers look siiiiiiiick

Fair enough

As far as I understand, the seals are not meant to hold much pressure. The feed line brings it there, and it's supposed to just drain freely through the turbo and back to the pan. Hence the big drain lines.

Very likely the seal could be bad, but also possible the drain could be the issue. Although I'd imagine tydes would have spotted it if it was something obvious.

One thing about the drain was that when I disassembled everything, the oil started pouring out of it. I put the bung as high up on the oil pan as I could. So I don’t know if I overfilled it trying to prevent a meltdown or ? However it was still smoking after it had burned enough oil to lower the level in the pan below the bung.

Drain maybe could be factor? I still say bad seal because even with the restrictor in the feed line the smoke went down but still smoked.

Anyway. I got it done last night and it’s 100% NA again. Just waiting on a AN cap for the oil pan bung to replace the rubber cap I put on.

I’ll save all the turbo stuff and see if I have time to take that turbo apart and look at the seal. I may have ****ed it up when I rotated the housings for fitment.

Also I keep bench racing in my head about buying one of these, stretching my body 10” and plopping it on this frame.

Word of caution, I might recommend not keeping your white claw so close to your brake cleaner. I know they may be similar in taste, but if you happen to mix them up the effects each have on the body are wildly different.

Well it was electrical contact cleaner, much tastier :flipoff2:

That black cherry whiteclaw though……:cool2:

Good to know. My kids are getting big and I’m thinking about how to make this bigger. I think I’ll take the rear bench and car seats out and put one suspension seat in the back and then two up front maybe.

But I’ve seen one flat fender on a Roxor frame and one early CJ5 on a Roxor and the whole concept seems pretty cool.
