SitRep 2026/03/14 1637L RON to Decatur TX from Dora NM
Westbound on U.S.82, East of Crosbyton, TX. Flat stretch doing 75 MPH. 55psi in the air bags.
IMG_0163.jpeg

Highest trans temp I saw on the gauge was 185
IMG_0164.jpeg

Pulling one of the hills. Still 75MPH
IMG_0166.jpeg

Stopped for fuel and checked trailer tire temps. 135-140 on the 16 plys. Truck tires were 120-125.
All this because the charming bride wanted this thing. I may or may not have to drive it to FL next month.

GCVW 22,800, so not bad.

There's no way to make the math math unless all three things are fatter than they look.

Like 7xxx trailer, 7xxx van, 8k truck.

Truck is 85, trailer is 45. That puts the van over the GVWR of 9600. Why so heavy I wondered. I asked the wife if she checked the tanks, she said she thought I checked. Nope :homer: Fresh water tank is full, gray 1/2, black 1/4:eek:
Going to run the van across the scale, then the truck and trailer, then the truck. It's an old beam type scale but the town keeps up with the certs. It's pretty accurate

Nice! Iike the van. Any interior shots?

How much do those vans weigh?

6k in my head, which is probably very far off
You are definitely off. Those vans are full chassis not the subframe type like the pre 95s. So you have 2500-3500 pickup running gear with an all steel body that is bigger than a suburban. If it was a cargo van with two seat and completely empty maybe 6k I would bet it's 8.5-9k if it's full conversion\camper.

It's wild that is 9.6k, considering my 30' class C is 11.5k dry

Not sure what brand and construction yours is but most commercial RV's are built more like a kids soapbox derby car vs the normal van demo derby build. Thin metal over wood frame can be made pretty big and still be light when it doesn't have all the steel and roll\crash safety the standard van had to go through before being stuffed full of RV kitchen and bathroom lol.

That is not light at all, I was thinking 6k in my head.

Also impressive that the modern diesels are running 40+ psi of boost sustained. I am stuck in the past, where a stock cummins was lucky to hit 20 psi. Same for a 7.3. :emb:

They run lower compression ratios than the older stuff so the overall ratio of squish being applied to the air is comparable. Think like pulling truck or race engine.

Couple of other things about the trip referenced above. Used almost 1/2 tank of DEF in +-700 miles.
I put 55psi in the bags at Decatur TX. 80 degrees and 1100 ft. Went to drop the psi at home and they were at 30. Conditions were 29 degrees at 4300 ft. I was surprised at the difference, didn’t think it would be that much.

What do I win for my guess? :lmao:

Have you gotten to drive it around much? The 6.0 gets a lot of grief but it's not bad when compared to other gas motors of the same era it came out. It just stuck around long enough without getting upgrades that people either compare it to the newer 6.2-6.4 offerings and then diesels.

No, the 6.0 sucks stock. Uses more fuel than a V10 of that era, but still tows like a small block. At least the other V8s got better mileage.

I was going to say about 8k times 3. But looking at the trailer, it's probably a little less than that. I'd be totally shocked if it was 4500lbs though. That's about what a 22' 14k bumper pull wieghs.

Okay, van weighed 8500, going to weigh the truck today.

I weighed the truck, 8900. That puts the trailer at 5400. I weighed that trailer when I bought it 15 years ago. I remember 4500, I guess I was off, by alot. I think I'm going to hook it up and weigh it again.
Drove the van to Florida and it did fine, 13.5-14.8 mpg. Actually passed some folks, the 6.0 was revving pretty good when I passed. "I got LS bro". I don't know what trans is in it, 60 or 80?. Spent the night at Cinnamon creek near Minden, LA. This thing is cramped, even for two people.
I guess I should've put this in the camper thread.
Nostalgia, I used one these scales back in 76-77 weighing peanut trailers in south GA
