Carnage share thread

I can't really figure this one out. Guy had his buddy do some work... had been driven, wheeled, and then driven back home. Next drive 5 mins down the road and this.

Everything still spun unbound and shifted thru gears. Front end had no bind.

I did notice the shift lever was tweaked so all I can think of is the yoke caught a too long bolt and tried to shift the thing while in motion.

Junkyard case, a new SYE, and front shaft and all seems good.

New ones that are updated and stronger are a lot of money from Cessna. I found some good used ones and still spent $4k.

So I'm guessing welding the crack up and welding a washer on to reinforce it is frowned upon.

Sometimes that is a perfectly acceptable solution. In this case, a bronze top hat bushing fits in that hole, so there isn't room for your idea. There are also a few other weak points on the torque tube that the newer parts have beefed up. I'm a huge fan of fixing weak links when the opportunity presents itself, so that's the route I went.

how the hell does that happen on such a low hp motor? I can see on a forced induction high hp engine turning Rs to the moon

Abuse? I don’t even know. It hadn’t blown up. I just lost compression in cylinder #1 and didn’t have any horsepower left. Where it’s cracked there’s no oil galley or coolant passage affected. No oil psi loss. No knocks, ticks. Crank is good, rods are good. Never been hot.

Edit: oh and that cracked web is between cyl #3 and #4. Loss of compression was cyl #1 so not even close by
