Nice TJ , setup perfectly in my opinion. :smokin:

My 03 TJ would do that , nv3550 rubicon. Would forget how to idle when you came to a stop for a while if the computer got reset. And if you bump started it then would not idle at all. :homer:
 
My tj idles like **** after the battery goes dead but the surging is making me think clean iac and throttle body.
 
I’m so slow. Finally pulled the rear passenger backing plate to replace it, the tab at the top that holds parking brake shoes was destroyed.

Since I’m here, might as well replace the bearings, probably have 125,000 on them. They aren’t noisy but they are sloppy.

Need axle seal also. Will need to pull them off to see if they have part numbers (will call Dynatrac also).

For a small Jeep, these Dana 60 axles sure seem beefy.

I was surprised to see a tapered roller bearing lubed with axle oil. The only rear axle I’ve messed with was early Toyota and it was sealed.

I’m more like one thing each month, but progress!!

A few weeks back:
Needed a new boot for t-case levers. Wild Horses has an AX15/Atlas boot. Very boogie, it’s very nice. The factory TJ AX has a raised portion on the metal plate where the rubber boots sits, so it’s not an exact fit.

I pulled the seats and the new plastic floor liner so I could rivnut the hold down bolts.

Did make a make a cut in the Wild boot , cut some of the metal to allow shifters to go all the way to the rear.

Put some real thick house window trim insulation around the perimeter to seal it.

Thinking I should give the front end some love, tore into the spindle for maintenance.

The hub was a little crunchy…

Want to change the diff oil, is there a trick to remove the damage bolts. In both front and rear the lower bolt heads are pretty torn up. Gonna try to hammer a socket on. Any suggestions?

Those 12 pt head's are great at holding the socket till you rockrash em...
Can you maybe go to allen heads?
 
Lady luck was on my side last night. Microtus , I didn’t find a ground down socket, but you must have left one. In my drawer of sockets, only have 2 twelve point sockets….a 1/2” and a 5/16”. The 5/16 had to have come with the Jeep. Don’t recall ever buying 12 points. That was my first luck of the evening, having the right socket.

Took some dental picks to the bolts to clean them up and give me the best chance of success.

Did a little die grinder work around two so the socket can fit, and took the grinder to the socket to slim it up.

Result was success! Got all of them loosened. Placed an order for new ones. 5/16”-18 x .75”. Ordered from

For the drive slug cover, having difficulty finding a new o-ring. From the Billavista bible, these are PolyPerfrmance. I have not tried calling them yet, but didn’t see o-ring listed on their site.

They are square cut. I measure cross section of .150”, ID of 3.625 and max OD is 3.970, and .134 tall.


The cross section is what I’m not seeing, in McMaster their cross section max is 3/32, mine is 5/32.

The -239 looks closest, does the width matter that much? It won’t fill the groove in the drive hub. Am I measuring this right?

I didn’t pull the carrier to inspect inner seals, I hope they are okay. There is no outer axle seal, so the line just worked its way inside. Driver side did have more diff oil in the tube than the passenger side.
 
Putting the driver side back together, only snafu was the inner bearing of the new bearing set didn’t fit the spindle.

The spindle OD is 2.25”

New bearing is Timken 387AS, and measured at 2.235”.

The old bearing is Timken 387A and measured at 2.25”.

According to Timken website, they are both 2.25” ID.

Since new bearing didn’t fit, I greased up the old one and put it back in. Need to get this on the trail.

Got everything greased and all put back in….almost. Anyone spot the issue?

So, the brakes wouldn’t fit. Installed the brake bracket and spindle in reverse order. One hour later, all corrected properly installed.

I stopped letting the tire shops clip on weights (when I remember), the rocks just strip them off anyways. I usually end up with an obscene amount of weights stuck to the inside of the rim.
