YJ rebuild with my son. stretch, 5.3 swap

What did you end up doing to fit the front of hard top?

I thought the TJ/LJ had a taper to the frame where the CJ/YJ didn't

We had to cut the corners of the windshield frame, then stitch welded the layers together to keep water out. A TJ upper seal between the windshield and the hardtop.

Still working on the window and door situation. There's a YJ unlimited group that's been helpfull. I've read a lot of conflicting things so we're trying to test fit before spending money. Several guys are running YJ full doors it looks like. Some run TJ full doors with the newer style striker. Some run YJ lowers with TJ uppers, with one of the pins moved. I've also read that guys couldn't get YJ full doors to fit right. Looking to test fit a buddy's full doors and shopping for slider uppers.

There's a thread on the previous forum with measurements to place the upper softtop mounts.

Best part of this build for me is the Father / Son bonding that is very important for a young person at this stage of life. Pays off bigley down the road when life gets in the way.

Kudo's to you Sir for taking the time to make it happen!

Nice build also, patiently waiting for updates :bounce2:
Thanks! It's been fun. He's always liked helping with stuff. Time flys by way too fast.

I've had to learn to step back and let him do it. That's how he's going to learn and problem solve.

My YJ full doors don't fit great at the lower end of the hardtop. I have a set of TJ doors I'll put on one of these days.

The YJ upper half doors don't fit the sort top at all. I haven't figured out how to deal with that yet, but I hear the TJ upper halves on the YJ lowers is doable, but if I do the TJ full doors then that becomes a conflict with the striker issue.

Right now I'm just trying to finish the coilovers/axle swap, so doors are low on my list of concerns.

Thank you! Same here. On the back burner but would like to have it figured out before paint.

Did some reading on big brake kits for the JK axles. Decide to try the JL brakes on the front and JT's on the rear. The rear calipers showed up first, looks like the bolt up perfect. Here's a comparison of the caliper for the 8.8 he was going to run to JT caliper.

Picked up a transmission to go through. He already has a NP241C to go with it. Now we gotta make time to get into both.

This morning when he got back from weight training for football he informed me he'd really like to spend some time with his girlfriend. How life changes..

Yesterday afternoon we installed the Motobilt tire carrier. The mount didn't want to fit the brackets. I default to cutting and grinding I guess. Fortunately Motobilt replied to my questions right away and suggested opening up the brackets.

Got it fitted up. Feels pretty solid. We'll have to modify or make a new inside bracket when we get to the cage work.

Working on a lot of odds and ends. Cage mock up put a smile on his face. It's been a bit since I built a cage, thus the cheesy mock up. I want to get a set of TJ upper windows to make sure we can set the cage up for a soft top as well. There's a cheap set about an hour away we are going to try and grab. I'd really like a set of slider uppers. I need a good look at them to see about moving the one pin that needs changed to fit YJ lowers.

Little more progress. This kid loves to weld. He welded up a set of Barnes DIY bumper kits.

Worked on planning, measuring and layout for the rear 4-link.

We picked up his engine from the machine shop. Cleaned, some Chevy Orange paint and started assembly.

Interested in how the soft/hard top thing works out. Just got my stretched YJ with a CJ clip on the road. Pretty happy with the way it’s performing.

I run stock LJ hard and soft tops on mine.

Yourrig looks pretty sweet. I'd like to see your rear inner fenderwells. DO you have a build thread?

No build thread. Assuming you want to see the CO setup. Used a Motobilt shock mount that’s tied into the cage on the top side. Able to run a 14” shock.

Are those the Motobilt fender wells too?
Yes. It’s all the parts they prototyped when they built El Jefe. And it all works and fits really good. Using their parts saves a tremendous amount of time on the fabrication side. If you’re time is worth anything to you it pays off in the end.

This rig I used their 4 link crossmember, rear stretch frame section and front frame section. Literally had a modded frame in a weekends worth of time ready to build on.

That's nice!

Been working a bunch of overtime so haven't made progress on that yet. I ask for some help on the Facebook yj unlimited group with the windshield angle. Gotta get further with the cage to set to angle correctly.
