Ran into this sending unit on a rollback I'm working. Upfitter is out of business so asking them is out of the question. Truck has an aftermarket tank that is 13" deep and looks to be using a non factory sending unit. Where in the world do I even start with this? Anyone ever source a custom sending unit?

6.9-7.3 forum theres alot of hunting for this problem there

I don't see why this matters. If the in-tank pump is bad replace that. If the level sender is bad replace that. You don't need to replace the whole unit unless it's smashed or rusted out.

you got a book of aftermarket fuel sending units without numbers?

No, but I still don't see why this is the question. If the sending unit is basically impossible to find then adapting to something readily availible is the right move.

The sending unit pictured doesn't even have a pump. Other than the sensor what could possibly be wrong with it? Just use an OEM Ford sensor and make the arms and angles match if you can't just swap the arm over.

What is wrong with the sending unit? Just the gauge?

Does it hook to the factory for gauge? Or does it have an aftermarket gauge somehwere?

When I built my custom 52 gallon tank I got a sending unit from Summit racing that had the correct ohm range for the factory gauge and the correct fuel line connections.

I would test the sender with a meter to confirm is has failed. This could just be a harness issue between the sender and gauge.
If the sender has failed and is an unknow resistance range you could connect a rheostat and test what resistance range is needed to operate the gauge empty to full.
Once you know the resistance range you can then source a sender that meet those parameters 0-60 or 0-100 ohms.

I have an 89 f-250 that had a 7.3 diesel in my yard for parts. if you need a sender send me a PM and i'll see if what I have would work for you.

Thanks

I've been in your shoes, I had to make a sending unit from a couple of OEM's. Yep.. it was a PITA but there was no other option that I could find.

I took an OEM sending unit and cut the top of the tank so it mounted to it, then I extended the pickup tube down to the bottom of the tank and did something similar for the fuel level sensor.

You can often pop the plastic cover off the sending unit and clean them up and revive them.
