Without confirming yet; the sending unit and fuel pump on my '94 Bronco are original equipment and appears to be working properly.

However, they're 26+ years old and have 251,200 miles on them.

My concern is them dying, and being left strained/stuck.

Would it be reasonable to replace them now BEFORE they die?

No. In my experience nothing lasts longer than a factory fuel pump. Unless you can get an exact replacement through Ford o swap in, I'd just buy an aftermarket pump to keep on hand to swap out if you ever get stranded.

Also, running around with a 1/4 tank or less is bad for fuel pumps. Heat is their enemy. Keep.the pump submerged in fuel and it will last indefinitely.

Still have the original sending units in all 3 of my trucks (88, 96, 96). In all the years ive owned them, the only thing ive ever had happen, is a float go bad (so it reads empty), and theyre super cheap to replace. I dont recall ever losing a fuel pump.

I have had to replace pumps in everything. 94, 96, 88 But I have never been stranded by a factory pump. There were always other issues, usually low pressure or hard starting that led to the pump replacement.

Now replacement pump, who knows, Had them fail in 3 months, had them last years. Definitely not the same quality.

If you are worried, I agree just keep one on hand.

Parts store pumps suck. If you do replace it, use an OEM manufacturer pump and not the $20 eBay special. As other have said, if it isn't broken, I wouldn't try to fix it.

I just put a larger tank in my 1976 f150. The fuel sending unit was original. It stopped reading correctly about a year ago. I’ve never had a mechanical fuel pump fail. OEM and edlebrock pumps is all I have ever used.

Both pumps/sending units in my ‘86 are original.

Mamas soon as you start replacing with non OE, you’ll get real good at replacing them, cause they’re all junk. My brother is at that point with his ‘85, gets 2-3 years max out of the newer ones.
