Well for one, if you're running up at high rpm often, probably not a good set up.

My thought was to basically have a wastegate the size of the factory exhaust. Only problem is that it would probably just fall off completely out of booat once that thing opened :laughing:

You totally can. You just have to do the step 1 of every succesfull turbo install : An ECU that can handle it.

Welcome to modern times where we can use a DBW TB as a boost control solution :

Use it on the cold side in order to have an even better response time vs hot side control.


The problem of running too small of a turbo is that it'll act like a choke point at high RPM and make you loose power. A lot of it.

I've rolled into the throttle at ~1500 rpm in the 2.7eb and it will pull pretty decent all the way to 5k or so. Of course I can directly compare to a SC, but I've never once experienced lag in that truck. If anything sometimes it down shifts and puts it above the power band.

What rpm does the race bronco spool?

BTW, this is an age old debate. I do think that turbos have came a long way, hence why they're getting so popular in drag racing.

Also, turbos are not permitted in top fuel cars, must be because they're better :flipoff2:

My race bronco doesn’t do anything till 3500 ish. VVT turbos make up the gap a little bit. Bronco pulls nice all the way from 3500 to the rev limiter at 6800 when the ECM dumps my boost via the BOV ☹️

In something that's starting with a 2L engine all that **** is a non starter. Just toss in a bigger engine.

That stuff only makes sense if you've got something super-optimized for what it's in and can't realistically go bigger.
 
For the engine sizes we're talking here a pair of AMR500s might work well. :laughing:

Nothing else fits under the hood of a little zuk without major butchery of lots of stuff. Every engine is physically larger than a G13 or G16.

Depends what you want to do. But a boosted I4, I lean on the side of Link g4X Monsoon or a Haltech Elite 1500.

No sir. Terminator X or ECU masters is the standard stuff in my circle anymore. Know some people who tried mega squirt but had nothing but problems out of it.

ECU Masters with good as well, they just aren't as mainstream as the 2 options above for JDM stuff. Meaning support is lacking for these specific applications, harder to find a good tuner etc

Megasquirt is for DYI guys that like to tinker. Not for racecars.

Terminator X is as basic as it gets. I don't understand wanting to run this on a racecar. And that's coming from someone who has a TermX on his personal car.


EmTron and Motec and some other fancy options are out there but the cost starts to go up significantly.

That's the only example you have and you repeat it over and over.
When it comes to Samurais, the OG K03 guy was Sean from the old board, who turboed his 1.6 swapped samurai in one night then went racing the next day.
He wrote detailed reports on how he did it within the $200 budget and gave away plenty of good info as far as running OEM EFI with a turbo.

Fastspec came a few years later and had a couple of really interesting builds and again, was sharing plenty of data about boosting those engines.

Unless you have experience in the matter, I'd rather listen to the guys that did it. And none of them were able to make it work on OEM fueling / timing.

Hey, that was me! lol
I did do a bunch of them. I found them to be alot of fun. And once sorted were block of wood reliable. Most of them I ran on megasquirt, which is in my opinion the way to go. Tuner studio software just works so well, and the logger is magic. I did do a pretty cool blow through gsx side draft bike carb setup that ran pretty good that was a super fun learning experience. The guy I sold it to still daily drives it 10 years later.
Probably the best performing one from a HP point of view was the 16v 1.6 with the super 60 and a megasquirt. That one ran really well

Thanx. I am now a boring turbo LS guy. Oh how far have we fallen!
Now everything just gets a turbo six liter!
I still get into a few weird projects but the boring **** is boring because it works so well. Honestly the hobby needed the LS. There has been a huge resurgence of hotrodding due to it regardless of what anyone says. I still make a living building hot rods and race cars and without it, man, I don't think I'd be where I'm at. So for me, I'm pretty thankfull of the damn things.
I definitely look back fondly on my samurai engine development phase. I learned alot digging into them and sorting out what works, which is good cuz there is absolutely ZERO money in them!
I was even thinking of finding a decent tin top the other day.................Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
 
I put these up in the vehicles and trailers section, thought I would throw the up here as well.
$500 for the red/grey Sami body and frame.
$1500 for the rusty white tintop. Runs and hard drives off a gas can. Needs tank.

Anybody parting out a samurai? I'm looking for the headlight mounts and the grille supports. I know the supports are available online but I cant find the headlight mounts. I can find the bezels but not what the bezel mounts to.
