Hydraulic Auger Build

Washers make awesome spacers when your afraid of hitting fixtures. Stack came out to .250 each

Holes drilled for 1/4-20 bolts and machined a hole in the center for the lathe work. Side was machined to reduce interrupted cut in the lathe.

They totally make an attachment that will let you do that - skid steer quick attach plate with 3 pt attachment and a hydraulic motor that has a PTO output shaft.

I need to do some testing on the flow of the aux hydraulics on the telehandler. It if will support it, I'd totally throw the bush hog in it and trim some trees. :smokin:



They also make the reverse - 3 point hookup to skid steer quick attack and a PTO driven hydraulic pump to run skid steer attachments.

Then again, this just sent me down the rabbit hole of hydraulic telescoping boom poles for skid steers and now I need to keep an eye out for a long hydraulic cylinder at the scrap yard. :laughing:

Since the telehandler already can extend...is it really worth the added complexity (and weight) of having the boom telescope as well?

I didn't suggest the added reach isn't worth it, I just mean, does it also have to be hydraulic (vs a simple pin entendable setup like mine has).

Yes, having the big stick past the curl means you gotta be on the ****ing ball (especially with foot pedal skid steer). That's why I added the winch/ rope setup for mine, so I can do extra gentle jobs, and also lift heavier/higher directly beside the machine (since mine doesn't hydraulic telescope).

Probably not, but why would that stop me? :laughing:

The ***an one that's currently inspiring me just has the cylinder mounted on top of the boom so it's really nothing more than a couple pairs of mounting ears and two hoses. Theirs is 1 segment hydraulic and one manual extension. Looks like nylon rollers on the hydraulic one to remove the friction element when there's a a load on it.

It'd be a fun project if I happened to stumble across a 6-8' cylinder at the bone yard one day.


Edit: The reason for an extension would be for doing something like putting up a metal building or hanging beams or trusses. The 520 only has about 16.5' vertical reach, which probably wouldn't cut it for most buildings.

A hydraulic would be fun/neat but a hydraulic winch on a mechanical extension would be more directly useful IMO.
I have skeemed one like that a few times for my electric contractor buddy to set light poles with.
 
Installed a land pride 3rd function into the tractor minus the power. While the instructions state the aux power connector should be located in a certain, I dont think my tractor came with one. There isnt **** in the fuse box for aux power. I will need to run my own wire to power the joystick.

I did skip the instruction to remove the loader before running all the hydraulic lines and valve. Nothing leaks from the fittings.

2.76in Dia for bearing
2.5in Dia for a hard stop for the auger. stop the auger before hitting the rotary seal in the bearing cap.

3.5in Dia will be sandwiched between the 2 tapered bearing. 3/4in width

Finished off the last of the machining for this project. Drilled the holes into the shaft for the auger.

Decided against mounting the rotary since I would need to also mount the tailstock to support the far side.

Used gage blocks to support the other side to avoid the shaft tilting in the vise.

Fit like a glove but the slop in a auger is huge so it wasnt hard.

I should have ordered the hydraulic hoes earlier but I really thought I could buy them in town for a decent price. Local place quoted $450 for two hoses with quick disconnect fittings. :barf: Cheaper to order online and pay for 2 day shipping to have here by the weekend.

Parts will go thru the sandblaster on friday before a coat of paint and blackoxide on the shaft.
 
I gotta say, when you started this thread, I thought it was gonna be some hick cobbled **** like I'd build for myself. I am genuinely impressed, as I'm sure many other viewers are.

Nothing wrong with cobbled **** but normally I dont post on the internet when I do that. If anything the build is a way to keep my skills up with machining.

Had to modify the bearing cap to give some relieve to the bearing cage (Inside counterbore). Additionally I turned down the bolt face to leave a face that will be .070 proud of the mounting surface. This will push against the bearing cone to add some bearing preload. Later I will cut a gasket out for the mating surface.

The shaft coupler will be welded onto the bearing shaft. The bearing was on tight and I didnt feel like taking the time to pull off.

Alot happier with this setup. Prior setup was a struggle to get on the tractor. In theory the setup should have worked but in practice it sucked.

The system was leaning a little bit left when resting in the cradle.

Fixed the lean by lifting up a small amount on one side of the support tube before welding back into place.

Hangs well. Debating on reducing the support tube to allow for more clearance when drilling.

As long as your ground is flat you're probably good but if you end up on a slope you will probably need more room on that support.

It looks excellent though.
 
Would something like a spherical bearing work on the hanger pin? Seems like it would allow it to hang straight if you were on a slight cross slope or some other kind of weird diagonal slope.

That is why I installed a joint that allows movement left and right plus forward and back. Similar to a spherical bearing but cheaper since I had everything already.

More the weight of moving it around and cost. The miller 252 welder is able to handle 1/2 thick steel no problem.

1. I have no used a hydraulic auger and only a 2 person auger 3 times in my life
2. I forgot to rev up the tractor above idle till midway thru video.

Overall the system worked amazing.

Not terribley fast but it appeared to have the power required.

I have one of those, picked it up cheap. It was apparently too narrow for the last owner as they cut one side off.
Mine lives with a 3 point bale spear on it until I get around to making a SSQA bale spear.

I know where there is a 60ish inch stroke 4" bore, 2" rod cylinder that could be had for cheap. Would need ends welded on though.
Could be dropped off en route back from Long Island to Rochester in couple of weeks.

Did you find the connector? On our MX6000 it was under the hood by the lower RF corner of the fuel tank.

I've bought like 5 of the 1/2" ssqa plates off e-bay in the past few months. Got the ones with the latch boxes too so I can convert a few small loaders over to ssqa as I get a chance.

$139 for a 1/2" thick plate. I think the UPS man hates me.
