66 Mustang GT Restoration

Because my road can sometimes look like this:

I bought this:

And of course the Mustang sits 1/4” too low for the car door to clear the bottom of the escape door so I am now adding 3/4” plywood to the existing floor.

Well… finally had a decent stretch of weather where I took the car for an alignment and then took the wife out in it. Owner of our local Ford dealership offered to buy it so that makes me feel good about our restoration. On a different note the carb is not right and is way too rich. I currently have it torn down again and see where pops has the checkweight in the wrong port and no check ball under it… :lmao: so total carb rebuild in the works.

Whelp… I’m all ears fellas…. I have been through three starters since we got the motor running. Two brand new ones and the one that was on car when we bought it. Each failure seems to be the same: the bendix appears to over travel/thrust against flywheel and tear the bearing up.

Second failure:

Third failure (orig starter):

There were two flywheel options, a 157T and a 164T. The original flywheel was a 157T and that is what I replaced with a brand new 157T. I measured the starter registry hole this evening and mine is 4.084” and the depth from block plate to ring gear teeth is right at 0.75”… Everything appears to be correct. What am I missing?

This isnt what you want to think about, but is the crankshaft thrust bearing still good? I've seen a buds toyota that would walk the crankshaft fwd when you stepped on the clutch... If your thrust bearing is wearing away, then you may be forcing the flywheel fwd into the starter gear when you have the clutch depressed to start the car. I really hope this isnt the case, but in my mind I cant think of any other reason those two would make that much contact.:confused:

No idea. Anyway to check that without pulling the pan? Motor has less than 50 miles on it. I got less than 10 starts out of the first starter.

I'd first take a look at the belt alignment to see if its still good... if the crank pulley is farther fwd than the rest the it could be a problem... maybe have somebody cycle the clutch with the engine off to see if there is any movement fore and aft of the crankshaft or flywheel. something soft to lightly pry against the flywheel/balancer/pulley to check for fore and aft movement... mag base and dial indicator could be helpful as well, set it up and zero it then step on clutch to check for thrust play.

Curbkrawler any updates to the starter problems?
I'm embarrassed to admit it has sat in my lift since my last post untouched... Been busy with a bunch of other stuff (garden, built the wife a she shed, and building cabinets in my V-nose). The old man just got back from Florida this week so I finally have someone to help me check for thrust play. We are actually planning on looking at it tomorrow afternoon after work.

Right on, its crazy how fast life can get in the way for sure... hope ya find your problem, but at the same time hopefully its not crank walk causing it...

The wife was extremely patient with me during the build. She never said a word about the amount of time or money we spent. Therefore if momma wants the garden tilled and a she shed that’s what she gets…
