I’ve had a little time over the last week and started on a little two bale hay trailer. Trying to keep it short, stable, and bomb proof.

I started off trying to decide what to make it out of, then looked out in the yard and had some 8x11.5 channel so the choice was made for me.

Then I screwed up here because I’m not smart enough to tell the inside of a triangle from the outside, which is frustrating at my age.

Are you putting three 7k axles under this thing? :flipoff2:
Just one dual wheel axle.

:flipoff2:

That’s the same thing my dad asked me a little while ago. Just one single 7k axle.

I don’t know exactly what the axle and tires and brake drums weigh, but this things only going to be around 1,100 pounds empty. I don’t know why everybody keeps acting like it’s a monstrosity.

His was 1 7k axle with no brakes

You're thinking of the little tilt trailer that you saw.

The big self loading trailer has a home built axle. Spindles seem to be in the 10-12k ballpark based on measurements. The axle they came out of was "rated" at 6k because the rear of the same truck was 20k and they were presumably trying to stay under CDL

While it makes for a ******ed ride height the 37" tires roll over **** really smoothly off road and the truck springs make it ride like a cloud of ***ties. I seriously can't over-state how ****ing awesome it rides.

For the one trick pony of a trailer that he's making I think it'd be worth copying. If I were doing it again I'd adapt the Dayton brake flange to 8x6.5 and use a normal 12" trailer drum rather than ****ing around with hydraulic brakes though.

Also 19.5-22.5s are alot harder to pop.
Those 14ply 16s I bought are basically on the same level but for $140ea they better be.

What 37” 14 ply 16s are you running? I was planning on 235/85r16s to match all our other trailers but I’m not locked in on that.

Sorry if that wasn't clear. The 235/80/16s that are on my small trailer are 14ply and rated 4k each.

The 9R20s on my big trailer are, IDK, 10, 12 ply? Probably high 4000s load rating. Those are approx 37" diameter IIRC.
