Need help determining what type of lift I need for work. It would be used primarily for changing bulbs in parking lots and on building and in school gym for reaching the roof for utility work. I'd like a 40' reach, and it needs to fit in a standard double door. Lights are on islands so I'm guessing I'd need an all terrain type?
I know **** about them, any input appreciated.

You might be better served by a boom lift. 45 ft articulated booms are somewhat compact.

Agreed and a boom lift is made for rough going. Whoops just saw the go through doubel doors you maybe talking about two different pieces of equipment

Figure out something else for the gym....a couple sets of rolling scaffolding will do that and let you get the right machine for everything else.

I think the boom lifts will level out. The scissor or single man lifts will make you **** your pants if the ground is not level.

scissor lift has a platform that telescopes out, could use that to get about 6' over if the islands around the light poles are narrow

Good info, now to find a boom lift that will fit through the doors and reach the gym roof. Im thinking maybe 30' may suffice. I haven't measured yet will do that tomorrow.

Don't fail look at electric boom lifts. There's some decent ones that run fr many hours on a charge...and some boom lifts shake around more than others when up all the way...Be sure to take a test ride and to be sure the people most likely to use it aren't afraid of heights..

There are compact electric lifts with 50-60' platform height and ~40' reach that fit through a single door. They use tracks and outriggers though, not sure how that would do on a gym floor.

The ones with outriggers that I've used were terrible to quickly move and use.

Most school districts have lifts on hand and will get them to the gym for you with a few days lead time.

I could put plywood down to protect the floor if need be but would prefer tires

Yeah this is for the district. Right now we have 2 pos lifts, want to replace those with one good unit.

The z45 series of genie lift will fit through the doors and can be had with non marking tires. JLG has a similar if not identical unit as well. Both are electric so they're indoor friendly.

^^^This guy knows whats up.

I've fit through double doors and reached the top of gym cielings in the past, but need to remove the center post of the door if I remember correctly.

Edit: electric will be just fine on blacktop as well, for the parking lot bulbs. Boom is the way to go.

Sterlingfire should have some knowledge on this as well.

Do you have a forklift? Could you not just get a “certified”man basket? And how many damn lightbulbs are you changing to justify the price of a new machine?

Perfect ill look into those. Thx

Yeah but I don't want to be taking that in the gyms.
its more than bulbs, it will get used a lot, from hvac to electrical to painting to hanging banners, etc.

Forklift + basket = 2 people minimum for any job. Boom lift is much moar betterer. 1 person can work --> readjust --> work. If used often, it will pay for itself in saved labor.

We have a JLG electric boom lift at my work - indispensable IMO. Maint. guy's using it today (solo) to run conduit for a new machining center. With a forklift + basket, it would take 2 people almost twice as long and be a goat rodeo in comparison.

Why am I the only one who thinks a normal scissor lift will be better?

How big are the islands? Scissor lifts have a slide out deck that let's you work over things to an extent. I would think this would work for the islands. Scissor lift would be better in the gym imo.

Take your pick. This is what you'll want. You can reach over the islands, and if your center mullions on the double doors come out, up to the z-45 will fit through.

Also, no matter what on the gym floor use plywood. It will help to keep the wood from getting weakened.

We have scissor lift and articulating boom lift (lp/gas) at work. Scissor is great in tight spots indoor. Boom is good outdoor and ok indoor in open areas. Both are needed for us. We have a pretty big treatment plant so maybe you can get buy with just one.

What ever you do stay away from the so called painter's lift! Only time I was almost moition sick was trying to work out of one of them in a copper smelter acid plant while wearing a full resperator

Some z30s in my price range. Thanks.
Just getting prices together for a wish list to present to the board.

Holy ****balls, those are $$$.

Can I see some older models on your used lot?

Im thinking it may be cheaper to rent one a few times a year.

Absolutely, on the farm we used to rent one a few times a year to clean the lights, swap bulbs and do roof maintenance on the sheds. They're surprisingly cheap to rent, at least around here.

I've ran the bigger 60 series a bunch and they were a bit nicer off-road but the Z45 is way nicer for what you're after. Not just because it'll fit into the gym but the machine is super versatile. It goes straight up, the boom telescopes, it has a Z arm to swing up & down and bonus the basket swivels too so it can get into a lot of spots.

This, but still put down plywood with a landscape fabric underneath it.
