I should probably just go by the dealership, but twice now I've been behind a new F250/F350 and just looking at the diff profile, that's not a typical Sterling diff under there. SRW too. Anyone know?

I’m pretty happy with the m275. I’ve got 275,000 miles on my ‘17 F350 work truck, most of it either close to or over the gawr and a lot of it between 60-100% of the gcwr. Tires are the limiting factor on the gawr so that doesn’t necessarily say much for the axle, but I think it is the limiting factor in gcwr so that speaks well of it.

Of course I was also happy with the sterling in my previous truck, so there’s that.

What is different or better than the sterling axles? Is the move to this axle just a cost savings measure?

supposedly, there is a lot of cost savings/weight savings in some of the axles due to the variable thickness axle tubes....
which is also why Ford recalled 35k 2020-2021 vehicles. I have no idea if the tubes have been fixed for 2022+.

Bigger gears, shafts, bearings, and tubes. It’s only on diesel 350’s, diesel 250’s with max tow or tremor package, and 7.3 tremors. The stuff with higher gcwr’s. Everything else still has a sterling so I can’t see it as a cost saving measure.

Doesn't that chart posted say the 250's with Tremor have the Sterling?

I have a 250 Tremor so I guess I could just go look...

Anyone know anything about the F550 axle? When I switched to winter tires on my 19 work truck, I noticed it is not a drop out 3rd member like they have used forever on the 550s with the s110-140?

Sorry for shitty pics

Took another look now that it’s warmer, my 2021 F250 6.7 Tremor package has an M275, so it seems to contradict that chart. It might be because I have a 10,800# GVWR package. It says the M275 comes with the Tremor 350

Also, glad I took a second look. Found fuckin rocks on top of my skid plate, I’m willing to bet that’s the faint rattling noise that’s been driving me nuts for months now. :homer:

Yeah I just posted in that thread with my info

I think the 10,800# GVWR package on mine uses the same axle as an F350 hence the lower cell

Seems crazy that it's not much bigger than what they put in the 1 ton. Although the new age dana stuff is supposed to be much stronger than the old style with the same size ring gear.
The M300 in the one ton is pretty big these days...

You basically have an f350. Found out about the 10,800 package after buying my f350; would have done the 250 sitting on the lot had I known. It sold the day I picked mine up.

Did you get the axle recall?

Roughly D80 sized ring gear. So the same size as what dodge used in thier 3/4t trucks 30 years ago

Probably fine for an F350 or 450 pickup, but seems small for an F550 considering they had a 14.5" ring gear at one point.
What's 9/16" between friends.

You mean Ford or Dodge? :stirthepot:

The Dana/Spicer Model 80 is an automotive axle manufactured by Dana Holding Corporation and has been used in OEM heavy duty applications by Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford. It can be identified by its straight axle tubes, 10 bolt asymmetrical cover, and a "80" cast into the housing. Dana 80's are made as full floating, rear axles only and are step up in overall strength compared to the Dana 70. 1988 Ford was the first company to use the Dana 80. The Dana 80 has a GAWR up to 11,000 pounds (5,000 kg), however it is common practice among manufacturers to derate Dana 80's. Gross axle weight ratings are lowered by the vehicle manufacturer for safety and tire reasons. The OEM Limited slip differential originally was a "Power Lok" until 1998 when the "Trac Lok" phased it out. Trac Loks were a $350.00 USD option with Ford Super Duty trucks.[1] The Dana 80 Trac Lok is unique being it is a 4 pinion unit, unlike other Dana Trac Lok units with 2 pinions. This was the only rear axle available for the 2nd generation Dodge Ram 3500 trucks.[2]

  • Ring gear measures 11.25 inches (286 mm).
  • 4" diameter axle tube.
  • Inner axle shaft spline counts are 35 and 37.
  • Pinion shaft diameter: 2.0 inches (51 mm)
  • Pinion shaft splines: 37
  • Axle Shaft diameter
    • 35 Spline: 1.50 inches (38 mm)
    • 37 Spline: 1.58 inches (40 mm)
  • Gear ratios: 3.23, 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, 4.10, 4.11, 4.30, 4.63, 4.88, 5.13, & 5.38
  • Brakes measure 13.39" for 2011 F-350 DRW trucks.
  • Brakes measure 15.35" for 2011 F-450 trucks (13,050 GVW).

The axle recall is only for 350's and above, basically Ford said "we did the math and it doesn't matter for 250's"

I was under the impression it was basically a 350 when I got it, not that I needed that though. But then I compared to my buddies ‘18 350 SRW long bed and I don’t see why it would be a tagged for more if the axle and rear springs are the same? Maybe it’s the tremor package?

White is the 18 350 and grey is the 21 250

I have the f350 Tremor. It was the only 350/cc/sb I could get at the time. Will have to check the ratings - guessing it’s derated?

Edit: the recall excluding the f250 is BS, imho.

It sounds like even if I showed up for the recall, they'd just weld the perches to the tubes more. Unless it was already cracked, then they'd replace.

I may just weld the perches more myself.

Post up the ratings, just for curiosity sake

You’re correct about the perches. My recall took ~9 months of hassle with Ford and local dealers. First inspection was 1000 miles away and welding at a dealer 100 miles away. Only out up with it to keep it under warranty. Only put 10,500 on it in over 2 years… should have kept the 2016.

Mine is rated at 11,500 GVWR, 5800 front and 6830 rear GAWR.
