1989 ford 5.0. Acting like it is out of fuel, currently refuses to accelerate, went 35mph up a hill on i40 outside Kingman to loves. Figure this isnt supposed to be green around the throttle body?

Going to hang out for a bit for things to cool off. Figured it was a fuel pump issue, but it was intermittently cutting out even with a full tank :homer:

Thoughts? Prayers?

maf crapping out? do those have a maf or or not? don't remember.

Yes MAF speed density in the years prior but I’d be wanting to see fuel pressure also

I just put an engine in one of those and it was randomly dying just like a fuel pump. It was actually the ignition module getting hot, it needed the silver solder between it and the distributor replaced which solved it.

1989 is speed density.

I strongly suspect the pump for 2 reason

1) when I redid the gaskets in the tank the other day, the return line was broken/missing on the pump assembly

2) if the fuel level is low, under half a tank, it will cut out/starve when turning right, sloshing fuel away from pump

Ignition getting hot would make sense as to why it came back after sitting for a few.

Throttle body doesn't seem to be losing enough fluid to cause this much of a problem. Going to let everything cool down and see what the coolant level is at

TB heater weap is common and will not cause it to die or lack power. You either have a fuel pump problem that's verifiable with a fuel pressure gauge or an ignition problem that can be easily verifiable with a spark tester.

Or you can throw random parts at it for our entertainment.

And like ManKrawler said, that 89 should be a speed density system

Not getting any CEL, not sure what the point of on board diagnostic is  considering it likes to do it only some times amd usually under load, it isn't something I can test at idle in the parking lot

Throwing parts seems like the better choice.

O'Reilly has a pump in Las Vegas, should've done it when I stopped for lunch but in Vegas I got trans fluid hoping it was just the trans hating life. Added 3 quarts amd it decided to puke some out, must be full :homer: Did it again so figured it was fuel level. Added fuel and all was good for about 50 miles until it decided to be noticeably worse

Besides fuel pump and ignition module, any other guesses? I'll head to Phoenix tonight if I have to, only a little out of the way

O'Reilly distribution center in pheonix has a fuel pump and closes about 5pm, if anybody wants to swing by

Grabbed an ignition module as they had one here

if you get in a bind, I can message him, he's got another friend in the area that does mechanic work, and might be able to help, but hes a little odd.

Helper photos

5.5mm for the module, 1/2" for the hold down. Ac makes this a bitch to do

C9nvienently there was a slight mar on the cap the rotor qas pointed to, should be close enough to computer from here

I'm guessing TPS. Had a Bird act like that.
If you come down Az89 in Ash Fork and need anything PM me. In Chino Valley. Shop and tools available.
I've got 36 hours until I have to be a work, if you are between hoover dam and central texas, I might swing by
